Did you get into NYU via ED?

I did. I had advice based on how Root reviews applications are reviewed
that it was in my best interest to be admitted first, especially since I had gotten in outside of ED it likely would have been a later decision.

In that case you should withdraw from Berkeley if you haven't already.

I appreciate the advice but I did that when I received my admissions and am quite aware of how ED works.

Well-to-do family --> ED --> let the gov't/lrap pay your debts.lexsi340 wrote:Update: In at NYU and Berkeley. Root interview next month
To future URM's applying trolling t- please maximize your chances... you can always retake later. URM cycles are unpredictable and from what I can tell just not properly represented on LSN (at least those of us with lower scores).
Based on (good!) advice here I had planned on not applying at all, but applied on a whim on urging from colleagues who knew my background. I didn't think a unique story could help that much, but it absolutely did.
Although I ED'd (a very risky decision), I'm not eligible for need-based aid based on my father's income, and with 100% PI aspirations, looking at the highest ranked schools with strong PI programs and strong LRAP programs was a best bet for me.
With my scores + URM status (not based on need) I received fee waivers from most T-14's (excluding Yale, Harvard, Chi, and NYU).
Disclaimer: While I could have retaken and gotten a 170+ (maybe?) and shot for higher ranked schools, I'm not sure the extra year would have been worth it for my personal goals.
You're quite the inspiration.

To other posters:

The OP says homeless in high school. Must be a crazy story.cron1834 wrote:Well-to-do family --> ED --> let the gov't/lrap pay your debts.lexsi340 wrote:Update: In at NYU and Berkeley. Root interview next month

Lol, before you make comment like that, take 15 seconds to read the OP. My non-custodial parent and step-parent who have not been financial present for over 10 years disqualifies me for aid, so yeah, LRAP is an attractive option and it does what it's supposed to do - encourages people to pursue public interest.cron1834 wrote:Well-to-do family --> ED --> let the gov't/lrap pay your debts.lexsi340 wrote:Update: In at NYU and Berkeley. My "unique" story was not intended to be inspirational or warrant congratulations, merely encouragement for future URMs with unique stories (I'm not sure why everyone is being an asshole about it being unique, it's somewhat odd) applying. Urms DO have unpredictable cycles, esepcially MA's, and there is minimal LSN numbers for MA'S with the numbers overwhelmingly saying I wouldn't get in.

As far as aid is concerned, I'd think you'd be able to take the NCP out of the picture if they were NCPing it for over 10 years but what do I know?
I do think, "lol, I'll just LRAP it up!" when you could just do the right thing and retake isn't the best move but you've gotta do you. You seem like a good person with good goals so I do legit hope you cop DAT ROOT.

Yeah, I would think so too, but after paying my entire undergrad out of pocket, I know otherwise.BigZuck wrote:As far as aid is concerned, I'd think you'd be able to take the NCP out of the picture if they were NCPing it for over 10 years but what do I know?

It wasn't quite that far, the goal was always RTK.

Yeah, I guess that's what I'm getting at. Making literally zero effort to mitigate debt and then planning on someone else paying back your full sticker price just doesn't fill me with warm fuzzies.BigZuck wrote:I do think, "lol, I'll just LRAP it up!" when you could just do the right thing and retake isn't the best move but you've gotta do you.
