And yes true, taking chances is a good thing, and sometimes people that have <5% chance somewhere get in. But you should also have realistic goals as well.gotsomequestions wrote:Basically. I mean why not take the chance on all of them and hope that one hits.

I can afford sticker. Not sounding like a dick but just putting that out there.didntgo89072014 wrote:Assuming you are a senior, get 3.9+ this year, bump GPA up to 3.7+, or get 168+ w/o accommodation. ETA: You have a good GPA in finance from a good school. Grab a consulting job for a year or two. With 3.7+ and WE, you'll get cornell, georgetown, maybe northwestern.
I wont be raising my GPA this semester but most likely maintaining it. Next semester I'll have chance.
Have an offer from an asset management company that manages over $40 billion.
But I dont want to wait. I have always wanted to be an attorney. I feel like if I don't go right away, I'll never go. Also taking it without accommodations isn't really an option. I need them because I have a condition that doesn't allow me to function at the same pace in those situations.

But with all of that success that you have had, why would you squander it to go to a school that is going to place only a small amount of grads in good jobs?gotsomequestions wrote:I can afford sticker. If you can't take without accommodations then I would almost certainly recommend getting that GPA as high as possible and some solid work experience, since they won't be using your LSAT score, really, as a basis for admissions.

Then go for it. You (or whoever is paying) will probably end up paying sticker or close to sticker at ND or BC. You will probably not get biglaw, especially since law school grades are entirely dependent on scoring well relative to your peers on timed tests.
If you are OK with small-law paying ~50k, it's a fine choice. Not one I would make though, considering your other options.

Well, it's not completely crazy. If you have a 10% shot at each of two schools, and your chances are independent, you have a 19% chance of getting into at least one of them.sublime wrote:I may have misinterpreted, but it sounded like playing the average game is applying to a bunch of schools where you don't have a good chance of either being accepted at, or being accepted at a reasonable cost, and hoping that by the virtue of averages, or luck, or something I don't understand, you will randomly get an unlikely result somewhere.
Rolls of dice are independent.
What's actually going on is that law school admissions aren't independent, assuming you're getting your chances off of myLSN. They aren't weighted die rolls based on your numbers, they're also affected by softs, etc. And softs that will let you get into one school that you have a 10% chance at are also softs that will let you get into another school that you have a 10% shot at.
So, I'd guess that if myLSN gives you a 10% shot at two schools, you probably have something like a 13% shot at getting into at least one of them, and the returns to applying to a bunch more are rapidly diminishing.

Re: 3.65/164...playing the average game?
Because I have a lot of connections that can land me legitimate clerkships throughout law school, and know that once I get in I can easily succeed.
Law is what I'm geared towards. I got some B's in science and stuff in college that lowered my GPA, as well as a B+ and B- from abroad that were complete crapshoots as my grade was an entire exam. Never gotten a B- except that abroad grade, and only a few Bs.
I have a 4.0 in my philosophy minor, 4.0 in my leadership major, and A- average in my finance major.
I can do what I'm good at. I just dont see much changing. Apparently its not worth it to take the LSAT again and my GPA is pretty solid from now on at or around 3.65. I was 3.7 before going abroad and those crapshoot grades lowered it, while I got an A and A- on my other two abroad grades to balance it out.

Confidence in my abilities to do well means nothing in terms of having a sense of entitlement or uniqueness.

It doesn't really matter how well you do, it matters how well everyone else around you does.

Seriously, law school is a game of relativity. You can be great objectively, but if you're worse than everyone else in your class, sorry, sucks to suck.
And, yes, law school is a bitch.

Re: 3.65/164...playing the average game?
Yes, but let's say you go to Penn. You're going to one of the best schools in the country, and also one of the most selective. Every single person in each of your classes will be just as smart/accomplished/connected as you, if not more so. You're all curved against each other, and half of you have to be below median. If you go to a lesser school, almost all of this applies as well. A few points less on the LSAT doesn't mean your classmates are idiots. And while confidence in your abilities is a great thing to have, have you ever taken a law school exam? Do you know what mix of abilities this requires? No, you do not. /threadgotsomequestions wrote:Confidence in my abilities to do well means nothing in terms of having a sense of entitlement or uniqueness.

You have a 50% chance of being below median. Thinking otherwise is indeed thinking that you are a special snowflake.gotsomequestions wrote:Confidence in my abilities to do well means nothing in terms of having a sense of entitlement or uniqueness.

Take the asset management gig
Everyone in law school is great at what they are good at. You'd be surprised by how tough even "median" starts to feel in a room of highly competent, hard working strong writers who can think on their feet and have substantial life experience.

Question: do people who get accommodations for the LSAT get accommodations for law school exams?

Re: 3.65/164...playing the average game?
I'm still figuring out how to articulate my thoughts, but I feel that the truth lies somewhere between "roll a die and that's where you'll end up on the curve" and "I've always been above-average before, why not in law school too?" I think the basis of my argument is that a school's incoming 1L class isn't as homogenous as some people would believe, but like I said, I'm still working on it.rebexness wrote:You have a 50% chance of being below median.
