To the person who said she could get into Emory - pretty sure Mercer is better than Emory for legal employment, even if both were at the same price.

Though I will counter that OP never implied they wanted biglaw. Maybe OP wants to be in a 2-10 person firm?
Either way, I agree on the retake. Better to get your school costs covered whether you go to Emory or Mercer or some other school - that debt ain't a joke. And if your goal is a small firm, it's even more pertinent to take down that debt.

Re: I want to go to Mercer!
Are you implying that those 2-10 person law firms (to the extent that they aren't just recent grads banding together) would rather take a generic Mercer grad over an Emory one?KingofSplitters55 wrote:Indeed, the plot thickens.prezidentv8 wrote:BUT SEE:KingofSplitters55 wrote: Haters gonna hate. Re: I want to go to Mercer!
mercer and emory are in no way comparable in terms of employment. Mercer seems to be entirely regional and really only place the top 10% of their class into firm positions in Georgia. Emory at least has NY/DC employers at OCI (from what I gather)

Hey everyone...I am a currently enrolled student at Mercer. I just finished exams so I have some free time on my hands. I will be more than happy to field questions. I know this is a very stressful time, trying to make sure you pick the right school and I know I would have loved to been able to candidly talk to students who werent being paid by the admissions office. So... ask away.

OK, please don't shoot me, I don't know that any of the following is necessarily even true, but this is what I would be worried about:
Mercer is traditionally a Baptist school. White Baptist, not Black Baptist.
Mercer places a lot of people into small law firms. I'm guessing by a lot of firms who know that Mercer is a nice Baptist university.
Small law firms in GA are going to be a lot of white guys.
White guys in GA are not the most forward-thinking people when it comes to AA hiring.
Do you really want to go to Mercer?

I think Mercer is a little more progressive than you assume.
For example, Mercer split with the Baptist convention over homosexual issues in 2005/2006.

Agreed. I can tell you from first hand experience, URM's in the top 20% have less issues with finding jobs than non URMs. I also have not heard of anyone, including employers, who have eluded to the fact that Mercer is a "good little white baptist school". Most all of the instructors are not from the south. Most of my instructors were from California or New England and are certainly not Southern Baptist. Take it for what its worth, but I have been there for 2 years now so I feel like I am speaking from a knowledgeable position.

I don't think it is wise to speculate that ALL of the white male attorneys would not respect her worth as a lawyer because of her race. You should not discourage her because of that.TigerDude wrote:OK, please don't shoot me, I don't know that any of the following is necessarily even true, but this is what I would be worried about:

Re: I want to go to Mercer!
I still think it's something worth considering. You don't want to be in some on-average hostile environment if you don't have to be. Personally, I have no idea what the area is like, but if what Tiger suggests is even remotely true, that'd deter me from the area even as a white guy.Lwoods1020 wrote:I don't think it is wise to speculate that ALL of the white male attorneys would not respect her worth as a lawyer because of her race. Right... IF what Tiger is SPECULATING is true... which it is not... at least you are admitting that you have no idea what the area is like. For me, I dont know how much stock I would put into some unknown persons speculations on a subject that they have little to no knowledge of. I hope the OP recognizes this. That is why I still frequent these boards, to offer somewhat more knowledgeable advice. Are there some racist attorneys in Ga.? Im sure. Are there racist attorney in the other 49 states? Im sure. Have I personally seen it happen here in Ga. Nope... well not exactly. I did get passed over even for a screaner at OCI for a firm that was exclusively URMs even though they interviewed URMs who were much lower in the class. (Im Caucasian) I dont know if that counts or not.
