I was also rejected at Penn, but either accepted or placed on "hold" at every other T14 I applied to except for Yale (still waiting to hear back). My GPA is the same as yours and I had a 170 LSAT, so I'm almost certain I wasn't rejected bc of my LSAT. I know one AA male with a 176 LSAT and near 4.0 GPA who was rejected from Penn, Mich, and UVA. He went to Yale. URM cycles are unpredictable, but I'm going to guess you fall into the YP camp for Penn. Don't let it get you down.

I know you're disappointed about the Penn ding, but I don't think you should necessarily consider that to be a harbinger for how the rest of your cycle will play out. Plenty of people get into higher ranked schools and get waitlisted/rejected at lower ranked schools for a variety of reasons so anything is certainly still possible.

Retaking in June will be too late to have an impact this cycle. Pointless if you want to go to law school starting this fall. But if you think you can score better and want to get into better schools next year go for it.

And quick question: what about your cycle is "NUTS" exactly?

I find it strange that I would get into Berkeley/Mich/GULC/UCLA and be waitlisted at TX despite the fact that TX is not as highly ranked and is supposed to care about socioeconomic disadvantage. I find it strange that I should be held at Columbia/Harvard (T5) which have always been higher ranked than Penn and dinged at Penn.

unless you are a tex resident you shouldn't be surprised, they ding all kinds of people from outside the state

Can you explain more what you mean about a Harvard hold being a death sentence? I applied in Dec and just heard from them today that I was being held..should I stop holding my breath that I have a chance?

A late hold relative to submission date or late in the absolute sense?
As an aside, I really do think Harvard will be accepting another round of URMs.
