Although HYP by itself won't overcome a sub-3.0 GPA or a horrible LSAT score, it does give a small but noticeable boost to applicants.paulinaporizkova wrote:false, bro, falseSnape wrote:HYP means absolutely nothing in admissions! What matters is how your GPA and LSAT help their numbers game.

Probably out at NW, Duke, and Gtown. They have a 170 LSAT median. Though NU might take OP with an ED. A girl in my class from a different Big 10 school got in with a 169/3.7 w/ ED.Muenchen wrote:Lol. They don't really care about your school or your extracurriculars; they're a tie-breaking differentiator at best.
I would suggest blanketing the T20 up to some of the lower T14, probably topping out at NU. Good luck.
Though OP has a good shot at UMich, and Cornell. Damn near a lock for everything below "T13 ft Gtown,"
I know everyone hates this advice, but if I were you I'd retake. 1-2 points would do wonders.

Re: 3.61/169 From Top Public School
Weirdddd. I had the EXACT same numbers but from Berkeley. I got ended up with solid scholarship offers to Vandy and Texas, and a small one to Michigan (where I'm headed). PM me if you want more specific info, but I was happy about my options. Oh, and I applied the first week each school's app opened, and heard from most places by December (UT, UofM, Cornell, and UCLA got back to me in November). If you look up each school's supplemental essays, you can do all the hard work ahead of time; it took me 15 minutes/school to actually plug all the info into their applications.bhurd wrote:3.61/169 from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Re: 3.61/169 From Top Public School
There is evidence that HYP undergrad is helpful for borderline applicants to HLS and CLS as seen on LSN. It seems to only be a factor for borderline candidates (ex: HLS may drop down to accept a 3.6 GPA instead of their usual 3.7 floor)ahduth wrote:I see this HYP thing repeated ad nauseum on these boards. Please present evidence that bears this out, or do not present it as advice. No one has shown anything conclusive to me that your school matters one whit in terms of how schools view your GPA.dpk711 wrote:Unless it's HYP, school doesn't matter.
OP, I'd bet you'll get into a lower T14 - GULC, Cornell. If you're really that ambitious, I'll give you the ad nauseum response to posts like this - retake. A higher LSAT score will open up significantly more options to you.
edit: No valid excuse.
OP, you might have a decent chance at Michigan and Cornell, although the 169 puts you on the wrong side of T14 LSAT medians.

Re: 3.61/169 From Top Public School
My UG puts out data on where it's alums and students go to law school. There was somewhat of a pattern. Northwestern and UChicago liked UIUC grads and Michigan hated us.dr123 wrote:There's absolutely no way to know if you're UG has any effect on admissions.
School matters at least a little, but it's not worth worrying about. It's not substantial, and it varies depending on the views of each adcom. The adcom at UW-Madison might think Northwestern grads are prestigious and Fordam adcom might think NW grads are idiots who couldn't even get into Brown.
Harvard likes Harvard grads. Penn likes Ivy league grads, and Uchi likes good schools. But all of those schools are achievable from TTT undergrads. You just probably won't get in if you have "reach numbers."

Re: 3.61/169 From Top Public School
You all can continue to be assholes and think that you know everything, but consider, if we're not talking about a T14, which we most certainly are not, it's entirely plausible that my mom could be friends with the dean of admissions and discuss a candidate whose numbers are sub-par. This is especially plausible in a city where the legal community is extremely small and tight knit. Clearly we're talking about a T4 school. My mother had lunch with her friend, because I asked her too because my friend had, thus far, only gotten into Cooley and didn't want to go. When I found out that my mom was friends with the dean at one of the two schools where she was held I asked if my mom would talk to her friend and she set up a lunch. Why would my mom do that? Because I've been friends with this girl since 3rd grade, and I wanted to make sure that even if she didn't got to a school that was leaps and bounds better than Cooley, that she didn't have to go to Cooley if she didn't want to.Flips88 wrote:And that her mom had a lunch with the dean for the sole point of discussing a very shitty applicantjohnnyutah wrote:Why does this sentence make me laugh so much? Now, that said, the point was to say that UG can definitely affect your admissions because it affects how adcomms read your numbers. I'm sure you all will bring your wonderful brand of skepticism and asshole-ishness to this post like you've been doing.

IF HYP matters answer this:
3.6/171 from Florida Technology School of Marshmallow Cultivation
Vs.
3.6/169 From harvard
Everything else exactly the same and they are both applying to Michigan

If I had to put money on it, I'd put it on the 171 guy.

170/3.5 from Occidental College
vs.
170/3.5 from Harvard
Both applying for Michigan Law
I would take the guy from Harvard.

What I hate about the HYP thing is that it assumes that someone from Williams, Amherst or Swarthmore wouldn't get a boost.
I'm not necessarily saying that any UG does or doesn't give you a boost, but if any do, i'd wager that the latter three would be more impressive to an adcomm than HYP.

I only wish I could have gone to schools as good as those, but it sounds to me like you yourself are trying to defend the 'brand name' of your mediocre national university over the best liberal arts schools in the country.
I'm not disagreeing that the vast majority of the US population has never heard of them, but in terms of getting into graduate school, biglaw, prestigious government work, those names will carry as much weight as HYP.

Amherst, Swarthmore and Williams are comparable to top 10 universities, but not HYP.

In at Michigan, Cornell, GULC, Vandy, etc.
Just put a lot of time into your Mich app and you'll probably get in.
