You are thinking of "mean" not median. Median and 25/75 is a counting process, you don't sum and you don't divide. a 120 is going to do the same as 169 to a 170 median - it won't affect it.firemed wrote:So I was wrong and right at the same time.r6_philly wrote:How do you seriously pull down the LSAT?firemed wrote:ndirish2010 wrote:You don't think the high GPA would make HLS possible? OP wouldn't hurt the GPA median, has a decent LSAT and is a URM.
He/She would really, like seriously, pull down the LSAT. Yale is occasionally known for taking some strange choices.... but Harvard isn't known for that, and they will get URMs with 170s applying.
Okay.... simple numbers so we don't get lost:
10 people in Harvard's class: 2x 180, 2x179, 2x 176, 2x 172, 2x 171. Median = 175.6
Now another 10 people: 2x 180, 2x179, 2x 176, 2x 172, 1x 171, 1x 163. Median = 174.8
This effect is exaggerated in such a small sample. Given the size of H's class they can take one or two or even three of these without any real effect.
So, I should have changed how I said it.... Addcoms who don't know stats or do math will think he would really pull down their median. And in a way, he would since he would have a statistically significant effect. Just not an effect US News would notice. Which is all the Addcom cares about.
But since H addcoms think it will happen, and because they have URMs applying with 168-178... they will take those instead. So I stand by my assertion that H won't take the OP, but I was wrong that he would seriously pull down the lsat in any real way.
My apologies.

Here's a better idea:firemed wrote:So I was wrong and right at the same time.

HLS class = approx 550
(1 to 136 lowest score) --> 120 LSAT / 0.5 GPA
(137 to 274) --> 171 / 3.78 GPA
(275 to 411) --> 173 / 3.9 GPA
(412 to 550) --> 176 / 3.96 GPA
Above info illustrates the bare minimum necessary to maintain Harvard's 25%, median, and 75% stats. Since nearly everyone with a 120 LSAT/.5 GPA would attend if admitted, HLS could admit 136 of them if the class size is 550...and the 25% reported stat would not change.
Obv this is an extreme, but this just shows that it's very possible for OP to be admitted without killing the 25% reported stat. (or affecting the 25% stat at all..)
The reason for this is the severely limited # of URM with high high stats - any law school would scramble to diversify their class.
