Re: Best NYU restaurants and bars...
You've got literally hundreds of them in the Village alone. SoHo, TriBeCa, etc. are only a short walk and I know of a lot. I know more of them in that area from living there this summer. There are also the cheap meals at the expensive places. Peep, for example. Otherwise $25 a plate, the Pad Thai is the best I had Downtown and it was $9 for a huge bowl. You can also walk out of Cafe Bari on Broadway and Prince for under $15 for a good lunch.

Re: Best NYU restaurants and bars...
Depends what you want. Here are some good specials:
Food
Cafetasia, 8th and Univ. - Thai (great lunch special)
Balluchi's, W 3rd and Sullivan I believe - Indian (great lunch special - half off for NYU students)
Mamouns, MacDougal and Bleecker / 3rd - Falafel, Shawarma (great prices all around)
Spice - 10th and Univ. - Also Thai, has better Pad Thai
Sushi - not sure of the name but it's on Laguardia between W 3rd and Bleecker, there are also a few places on Houston
Bars
Cooper 35 - Cooper Square and 7th Street (maybe 6th street - the address is 35 Cooper - which is the same avenue as Third Avenue) - $4 very strong mixed drinks until midnight
McSorley's - just a cool place overall, also on Cooper and around 7th street
Phoebes, Off the Wagon, Down the Hatch all have various happy hour specials and random, say, $.25 wing nights... give them all a call and see what their specials are.
Enjoy!

Ok so...it's a guilty pleasure but I'm obsessed with Saigon Grill. Really good/inexpensive/greasy spoon Vietnamese. Awesome pork chops. Awesome pad thai. Awesome everything....

Not sure why my post didn't go through but Olto is right on the mark with Off the Wagon and Down the Hatch. Really good specials, bartenders who hook you up if you're good to them and a nice student experience.
I need a cheap sushi place. I was making money over the summer so I didn't mind paying $30 for two rolls delivered from Tokyo Bay.

Thanks guys. Looks like I might force myself to like Indian food with that half-off special.

Go to the Corner Bistro at 8th Ave and Jane. Best burger in the city ($6) and $2.50 McSorley's ale. Can't beat it. About a 10 minute walk from the law school. Also, the Stoned Crow on Washington and 6th Ave. has great bar food and pretty cheap beers ($4-5, I think)

Don't CLS bars have dollar beers?

NYU is not CLS, for all the good reasons and all the bad. I'm not too worried myself, but that's cause I'm transitioning from the most expensive undergrad in the country to the village.

Cheap sushi - the place I'm talking about on Laguardia and w 3rd is pretty cheap. There is also a place on I believe 10th and 1st that has "half priced sushi" for lunch. It's pretty solid. I honestly don't eat sushi often enough to be able to help out much more than that ... sorry!
OH AND DON'T FORGET BBQ ON ST MARKS AND 2ND AVENUE!!!! CHEAP CHEAP rotisserie chicken and HUGE margaritas for I think $7 (or +$1 for an extra shot)... and cheap pitchers. Can't emphasize how good the food is for the amount of money you're spending. There's also one on 8th avenue and 23rd street - an easy subway ride away from the law school (w 4th subway stop).

I can't believe I forgot Suzies on Bleecker off Sullivan (I believe). I am very very picky with Chinese food but this place passes my arbitrary test. I think their lunch special is: egg roll or wings, choice of soup, egg noodles on the table, entree (various chicken, beef, etc.), and fried or steamed rice... all for about $7. GREAT deal and I always leave stuffed.

You future NYU'ers, if you like soul food, have also got to check out The Pink Tea Cup, one of my favorites. It's on grove past 7th ave and has great soul food!
Also in the west village, corner bistro has amazing burgers...

As far as bars go, I used to go to Macdougal st alehouse a lto, but I don't know how it is these days. Peculiar Pub has like 300 different beers, which is pretty solid. The slaughtered lamb west of sixth ave can be fun as well.

That's good to hear! We'll have to start a thread on that as well.HandsomeDan08 wrote:Harvard Square has great food: Mr. Bartley's Burgers, Felipe's, Le Creperie, Veggie Planet, Pho Pasteur, Tealuxe, etc.You future NYU'ers, if you like soul food, have also got to check out The Pink Tea Cup, one of my favorites. Mahmoun's on Macdougal has $2 falafel sandwiches. The one on St. Marks is $2.50, I think.
