Housing at Pepperdine, Loyola, USC?

Post by heartsonfire » Sat Mar 17, 2012 8:13 pm

I'm heading down to southern California next month to check out a few of the schools I got admitted to. Has anyone seen the law student housing situation for any of these schools and can tell me what they thought of it/provide pictures? I know Pepperdine, for example, has a "virtual tour" but it's kind of small and not as good as a real picture. And it is my understanding that there is no on-campus housing at Loyola. So how is the neighborhood (from the perspective of someone that goes there, preferably?)

I don't know if my response is a little late, but the housing situation is rather a dramatic difference between Pepperdine and Loyola/USC. Pepperdine is in Malibu, so you're in a much nicer area, albeit a more remote area from the major metropolitan area. Whereas Loyola/USC is in downtown L.A. There is some nice housing for USC right on campus/right nearby, but just outside of it is a pretty harsh area. There are some interesting places near downtown L.A. that has a cool vibe in Silverlake and east L.A. near Loyola, but it depends on what you're looking for. PM me if you'd like more specifics.

Your budget will dictate where you can/ will have to live. Lots of my friends from USC live in the Medici right there on Bixel and 7th, which would also be good for Loyola but expensive. I know four guys who split a 2 bedroom there and they paid more each than I paid for a house at my UG. Don't live in Cardinal Gardens, super dangerous student housing. You can find some 600 square foot boxes if you are willing to live east of main (it is much nicer than it used to be but it is right next to skid row and generally smells like pee) but the apartments are rent controlled. You could also live in South Pasadena, Burbank, Glendale, or Silverlake and either drive or take the metrolink into downtown. It would be cheaper but the commute is not fun. But generally that area around 7th and Figueroa is nice and pretty safe. Pepperdine is a whole different animal since it is in Malibu. I don't know much about Malibu but I imagine it is expensive as well. I work at 7th and Bixel and live near there so if you have any questions about specific places I would be happy to help you out.

No matter for what purpose you are heading to this place, you will definitely get good accommodation schemes. Ask the popular real estate agents and they will get you to the right place.
