Cheap plane tickets?

Post by llachans » Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:59 pm

What's the best sites for keeping down flight costs for ASW visits?

So far, I'm really liking Sidestep.

I don’t know if this is something they do every week, but I bought American Airlines tickets on a Friday night that were really cheap. Maybe Friday night is a weird time to buy plane tickets. But mostly, I just check prices a lot at different times of the day.

Always buy on a Tuesday afternoon--that's when most airline sales come out.

And Kayak is great.

paul34 wrote:you could try spirit airlines, but they don't fly everywhere, and they'll charge you even for a carry on. But if you can fit your weekend stuff into a personal bag, you could give it a go (if they fly to where you're going). It can be pretty cheap at times.

disclaimer: I've never flown with spirit before, but know people who have.
Spirit is great, but don't depend on them to be on time... and they charge fees for everything. However, they are super cheap, so if you are flexible, they are a great option.

I like orbitz, and they've been good to me in terms of cancellations and stuff.

Wow. I can't find anything cheaper than $450 and I'm only going Chicago >> Portland.

Smaller airports are sometimes more expensive since less supply for more demand.

Yeah, this. Also I use the option that's something like "check for flights three days in advance and three days after" to see what days are the cheapest

Sometimes what you can do is buy a flight from SF to NYC that STOPS in Chicago, get off in Chicago, and not take the second leg. But airlines frown upon this and it only works if you do it one way--since if you don't get on the second leg, you void the entire contract, including the return flight.

Edit: oops, you're going to Chicago-Portland, not SF-Chicago. Above doesn't apply :(

Basically Portland to/from anywhere will be $400+, unless it's Portland to Vegas or San Jose. Even flights to hub cities are ridonk from here.

I see a Frontier Portland-Chicago-Portland ticket (stop in Denver, both ways) flight for $311 right now. Maybe the reverse trip is also lower.

I have to second the bing travel thing. It's actually really nice how it tells you whether prices have been increasing or decreasing. I got a super steal $140 round trip ticket from DC to chicago thanks to the magical world of Bing.

I'm also a big fan of kayak, though. Especially for international travel.

http://www.skyscanner.com was a big one for me back when Kayak was just starting out

It's great because it's really flexibile with how you search (by month or even the whole year).

Edit: Just found SF <-> NYC in March for $280 non-stop via Virgin America, for example.

Also, I've seen good deals on "airfarewatchdog"

Non law school related, but I just booked a Ft Lauderdale to San Fran nonstop for $210 roundtrip in May on Virigin. Plus virgin is the best airline I have ever been on in my life.

I find sometimes booking 2 one-way tickets instead of round trip can knock money off. For ASW I just booked my flight with one-way tickets and saved $60.

Expedia shows you search results with mix-and-matched airline 1-way tickets. Sometimes they're cheaper, sometimes they're not.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
