Ok to bring parents on law school visit?

Post by dp882 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:43 pm

Starting out on some summer visits and was wondering if law schools want to see just you, or if it is ok to bring parents along

It is absolutely ok to take them although I would caution you to maybe not take them to admitted students days. Even then law schools won't care at all, but future classmates may judge. At all the visits I went on, there were a lot of parents.

Above poster is absolutely correct as well.

I wouldn't do it, but I've been out of school for a few years and will be paying for it myself. If your parents want to go, it's fine.

and if for some reason you do bring your parents to an accepted students day, don't let them say a word to anyone other than you.

Will they pay if you don't bring them? if so, don't bring them.

Will they pay only if you bring them? if so, there's really no question in my book.

I would take my mom (single parent) with me but as some other posters suggested I wouldn't bring her to a ASD or ASW.

or course it's okay. Seriously. I don't know why people are so conscience of this.

Graduate professional school.

I guess it's OK if you're a prodigy and going to law school at 14.

If you're visiting schools before you even apply, then it's not about the law schools seeing you, it's about you seeing the school. Bring whoever you want.

No. You are an adult now, and it makes you look like you haven't grown up. Bring them to the city, but go to the campus alone and let them take a separate tour at a later time/date without you.

If you must bring them, be sure to tell the admissions staffer that mommy and/or daddy is/are footing the bill and insist on knowing what they are spending their money on. it also depends on whether or not you have already turned in your app. They put "notes" in your file, and "brought mommy along" isn't one you want in there while the adcom is about to say yes or no.

Seems to me that anyone that is even asking this question is either not mature enough for law school or not confident enough to be a lawyer.

I think it's a great idea to have your parents there with you through the whole law school experience. However, I believe the general rule is that you only have one parent (whichever is the dominant one) sit in with you during OCI's.

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Def no to ASWs. For just regular visits, sure as long as they aren't embarrassing/obnoxious. If you search there are some funny stories of parents asking inappropriate questions, haranguing Adcoms about how great their kid is, driving onto sidewalks in law quads, etc.

I actually feel like I need both parents present to illustrate the full scope of my abilities.

You might be right. If you have any siblings who are incredibly intelligent and/or attractive, bright them along as well. This will prove that you are of good genetic stock.

You can also offer them as slaves for the Admission Council if the school is a reach.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
