Re: UVA ASWs 2010
Has anyone been able to find a cheap/reasonable way to get from Detroit to Charlottesville? So far it looks like my best option is to drive to Chicago & fly out from there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, I'll definitely check that out. What type of transportation do you use to get from there to C'ville?boo jersey shore wrote:Try flying into Dulles out of DC instead of Charlottesville. Re: UVA ASWs 2010
Does anyone know how to get to Charlottesville from the DC Dulles airport by public transportation? I could take the Amtrak, but then I have to find a way to get from Dulles to the Union Station. I thought greyhound has a bus from Dulles to Charlottesville, but when I called them, they told me there isn't one...
I guess I could rent a car, but then I have to pay extra because I'm <25. Plus, I'm scared of driving in a small college town. I don't do well on small lanes and one-way streets.

Look around on this thread and the uva c/o 2013 thread. there are plenty of people looking to carpool in from DC. Pretty sure the facebook group has some of these people as well. Probably some crossover. Check itout.

Oh, I don't know if there are one-way streets around UVA. I just assumed so because most old college towns I went to have one way streets near the schools...slider wrote:Whoa! Getting to Union Station is possible by public transportation but will require some effort. You can take the Washington Flyer Coach to West Falls Church station on the Orange line, take the train to Metro Center and transfer to the Red line, which will take you to Union Station (I recommend this option). Alternatively, you can take the 5A bus to L'Enfant Plaza (cheaper option) and then either take a taxi to Union Station (should be pretty cheap) or take the Blue or Orange train from L'Enfant Plaza to Metro Center and transfer to the Red line and get off at Union Station. Both options would probably take around an hour or so.Apple Tree wrote:Does anyone know how to get to Charlottesville from the DC Dulles airport by public transportation? Re: UVA ASWs 2010
Just booked my hotel for Thursday/Friday night. While I would have enjoyed staying with a student host, it's doubtful I'll be arriving in Charlottesville until after midnight Thursday since I'm not taking the day off from work. Definitely looking forward to the weekend though.

It looks like I'll be renting a car after all. I'm getting to the Dulles airport around 4:30 on Thu afternoon (Apr 8th) so if anyone's interested in carpool, please PM me.

Re: UVA ASWs 2010
I'll be at the Cavalier Inn on Wed night, and was hoping to look around C-Ville Thursday morning. Does anyone know if "downtown" is walking distance, or will I need to get a cab / is there a bus to take? Also, is the law school walking distance (with a suitcase) from the inn?
Also, my host lives in the Ivy apartments, and I looked up walking directions, which said I'd have to walk 2 miles which I can't believe. Can anyone give me better directions? Sorry for all the questions, I'm kind of worried about not having a car around...

Did you check out the hotels on the UVA law school list? When I checked yesterday, it seems I can still book rooms in some of the hotels that are within 3 mile radius of the campus.hannah87 wrote:is anyone else finding it IMPOSSIBLE to find a hotel for the april 9 weekend? my husband and i need to stay on thursday and friday night and can't find anything near campus. even the expensive places are all booked!

If you were a) driving b) planning to rent a car or c) can afford to rent a car, you could stay out by the airport. It seems like a short 15 minute drive and I booked a much nicer place out there for in-town Econolodge prices.hannah87 wrote:is anyone else finding it IMPOSSIBLE to find a hotel for the april 9 weekend? my husband and i need to stay on thursday and friday night and can't find anything near campus. even the expensive places are all booked!

There is a bus that runs from near the Cavalier Inn straight downtown that is free with any student ID (I think). Just ask at the Cav. Inn where the nearest stop is, its a pretty easy trip to make.Amelie wrote:I'll be at the Cavalier Inn on Wed night, and was hoping to look around C-Ville Thursday morning. thanks so much, apple tree and bwp! i did use the list, and could only find hotels that are 2 miles+ away. while we will have a car down there, things get hairy because we want to try to walk to services and shabbat dinner at the campus Chabad on friday night. i don't know the area at all and don't want to risk a sketchy walk on a highway late at night. and over 2 miles is just too farApple Tree wrote:

Decided to do the ASW on April 9th, and I requested to stay with a student host today (since the deadline is apparently tomorrow...whew). Sorry if someone already asked this -- if you request to stay with a student host, does that mean you'll stay with one for sure, or is there still a chance I'll have to scramble to find a hotel?
Looking forward to it, though!

Has anyone thought about what Curricular Sessions, Lunchtime talks, or "Careers" sessions they are going to attend from the ASW tentative schedule? Or I am alone in that?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
