I'm not basing this off any numbers, just my feeling. I also live in the worst area around campus. Campus itself is very safe, I'm just not sure about a lot of the living areas close to campus. Maybe I'm just more sensitive to it due to being a victim myself and/or having transfered from an abnormally safe school. I'm not saying it's bad enough it would stop me from going here, but I definitely feel I need to be more alert in general than I even did around dc. Just something to weigh if you are sensitive to that type of thing or if you have a family. I do know that areas father away from campus are very safe but they are also a good bit more expensive.

I can only speak of the campuses I know, but WUSTL's seemed safer than any I've been to save Sonoma State (Berkeley, for example...relative hellhole). A lot of those issues aren't even city problems so much as college problems.

South of campus is a great residential neighborhood as well as Fontbonne University. East of campus is Forest Park, and west of campus is more very nice residential neighborhoods. So east, south, and west are all great neighborhoods. North of campus is mostly a nice residential neighborhood, although like I said, some parts further north around Delmar can be sketchy. You have to be careful around the Loop, especially near the Delmar metro stop.

IMO, the neighborhood Patriot and I live in is not bad. Yes, we get some sketchy people, and we did have some recent crime taking place near my apartment, but I'd say the Skinker-DeBalliviere neighborhood where I live is pretty good. Definitely better than the hood I lived in my senior year of college.

It is also worth noting that the school has tried to adress some issues by starting to offer rides home at night and increasing some patrols off campus

After this trip, I'm about 70% sure I'll be at WUSTL in August. It was a great day, and it was nice meeting some of the people from tls. Still slightly worried about the portability of the degree, but compared to my other options, it's looking mighty attractive.

When me and BK were waiting for the metro today, we talked to a guy there about the Wash U campus (he brought it up actually). He said it was really dangerous, but he was basing that on when he used to hang there and do dirty shit like 15 years ago. Then I took the Metro and somebody tried to hard sell me some gold chains.

So yeah, if I go here definitely getting a car.

As someone who couldn't attend ASW, could you comment on this a little further. What was the career services presentation like and what did they do to mitigate or reinforce your fears about job placement outside MO and the midwest?

The presentation was nice...I liked the fact that they were obviously pouring money into the CSO and trying to get their numbers up based on their staffing level. They were fairly frank in that a lot of leg work is needed if your grades aren't great, and that if you want to work in a certain area, you absolutely need to work there your 1st and 2nd summers. They did try to sell WUSTL as a national firm, but it's really not. The $3000 1st year summer stipend for PI/govt work is also a pretty nice thing, though I wasn't quite clear on how hard it is to qualify for it.

Bottom line, despite my worries, I'm attending. What made my decision easier was the fact that if I do decide to come back to NC, I've got enough ties that going to WUSTL won't be a huge issue, but if I want to work elsewhere, WUSTL is significantly better than my other options.
