Eh, i don't think any reasonable person will argue that Texas is some type of utopia. I personally would like a little less bible thumping, but this gripe, along with numerous others, does not change my belief that overall this is a pleasant and affordable place to live. Between Austin, the DFW metroplex, and Houston, Texas really has everything that I could want. And it's cheap. As a poor Law student, frugality is a big plus.

Haha...I knew I was leaving something out. Although Texas (shocklingly) does not lead the nation in executions per capita. That crown goes to Oklahoma And it's not even close.

Also, I forgot to add the incredible insecurity that most Texans seem to feel over the state. They always have to argue about how "no, it's really a nice place!"

People in places that are actually nice don't need to. Texans have to argue incessantly that their state really is the greatest state, blah, blah, blah. If you say you don't like it, then according to most obnoxious Texans, there is something wrong with you. Everywhere else, people just say "OK" and move on with their lives.

I wish some of you having this debate can just accept that EVERYTHING you are arguing about is subjective and end the discussion there. In Kalvano's case, his views about why he hates Texas can be summed up as "well its not anything like the New England states". Well duh. You have very specific preferences that are not congruent with what the state has to offer. It's not cold here, it doesn't snow here often, and people in general are a lot more laid back and friendly/talkative (or nosy and rude, as kalvano puts it). If you would rather move to New York and pay twice the cost of living for what New York has that Texas does not, that's certainly your choice. But I really wish people would STOP judging a state on absolute terms of suckage/awsomeness based purely on subjective measurements. The reason why people bring up cost of living/low taxes so much in defense of the state is BECAUSE it is NOT subjective. Lower costs of living, in general, are a plus for EVERYONE - unless you're Kalvano. Hate the heat? Some people prefer that to the snow. Hate how "nosy" people are? Some people call that southern hospitality.

As to how "insecure" people are, i think you can attribute that to the pride that most Texans have. I have noticed this myself, but to be frank, i think the state has a lot to be proud of. Americans are proud of the fact that they overthrew the British to develop an independent nation. The same can be said of Texas and Texans in overthrowing the Mexicans for our independence. Plus, the fact that we rival California in size and consistently have one of the most robust economies in the nation gives Texans every right, in my opinion, to be proud.

One more thing to note. I find that you are very vocal in your displeasure of the state. At every chance, you make an effort to drop some disparaging remark about Texas and how much it sucks, when you yourself agree that your reasons for disliking the state are based on personal taste. Then, when people either challenge you or ask you for your reasons for disliking the state, this is somehow turned into a discussion on flawed Texan pride and snobbishness. Is it not fair that if you make disparaging statements about the state, those who love it would like to defend it? Just as some people like to incessantly defend the state, there are others (like you) who incessantly trash the state on purely subjective measures. I would argue that if you went to New York and trashed New York to a New Yorker's face, 9 out of 10 would display the same behavior that you have described. People defend what they love when they see it being attacked by flawed reasoning. I think this is true in general for all people, regardless of geography.

I think that hes spent plenty of time in Texas before his time at SMU. Regardless, SMU is a great school and hes certainly entitled to his opinion. The only thing that perplexes me is why he keeps insisting on stretching what should be "Texas is a shitty state for me " into some pompous truism that Texas is just shitty. I would be a lot more understanding if maybe he went to Baylor and had to live in the backwaters of Waco, but the guy fucking lives in Uptown Dallas, one of the most beautiful and active social scenes Texas has to offer (other than Austin).

You do realize over three miles separate the northernmost border of Uptown Dallas (which stretches from Woodall Rogers in the south to Haskell Ave in the north, maybe Knox/Henderson; but not really) and the southern tip of the SMU campus right? You realize SMU is in Highland Park, not Uptown? Try telling someone who pays property taxes in Highland Park that they live in Uptown and see how that goes.

Further, you have no idea where kalvano lives or why. Plenty of people commute to SMU from Richardson, the M Streets, South Dallas or Arlington. Especially if kalvano has to commute in, I'd hate Dallas too.

Bottom line, you have no fucking clue why s/he chose SMU, nor does choosing a particular school have the slightest of implications on whether one likes the state, its people, its rhetoric, sports or amenities. Your posts are littered with illogical, baseless assumptions; this reflects poorly on you.

There are only two logical inferences which can be drawn from that statement. Either A)Not having those things (all three of which I consider equally vital to landing a cushy job in Dallas) will result in an increased likelihood of landing a cushy job; or B) All persons who do not have "serious grades/hustle/luck" are destined for "cushy" jobs in Dallas. ^This. Sure the summers suck, and the winters are up and down - the springs are not bad though. But I'll tell ya, Texas' culture is what makes it. I mean, at first it takes some adjusting to, but after a while it kind of grows on you. Homes with walkway cobblestones the shape of Texas leading to the doorway, Texas state flags flying in every driveway, and Lonestars all over the place, I mean what other state has people that are into it that much? And pretty soon you've gotta have a giant cowboy hat-buckle and boots just for kicks. You start to swagger around, and "y'all, bless your heart, and fixin' to," words you never thought you'd use, start creeping into your vocab. You begin to really enjoy the great BBQ joints out in the sticks, like the Salt Lick, where you can plop $10 on the table and fill up on all you can eat smoked ribs, brisket, and sausage links. It almost makes you forget that there is an air conditioned city like San Diego where you spent most of your life . . . almost.
