I went to the events yesterday and I'm heading over there in a bit for today's events. Great impression so far. It did seem a bit like a sales pitch, but the faculty and students are sincere and friendly. Great facilities, and I really like the emphasis they place on PI work. We went to a bar in China Town last night which was fun. Everyone was social and the students were eager to answer questions. The biggest detraction, to me at least, is the location. I wish it was in a better /more lively part of DC.

argh, I wrote a long post and then lost it by accident.....

Anyway - the jist - Supreme court institute, wow. Clinical programs were hyped up (probably with cause). The culture wasn't for me - D.C. is a lawyerly city and Gtown's the best law school in town. For some people, that means they are very happy to be there. For others, the need to drop the mention that "we're the best law school in D.C." (as if visiting students didn't already know that).

Culturally, schools are hard to define, though it didn't seem competitive; the size lets you be anonymous when/if you want to; preconceptions (warranted or not) arise about your sections, sometimes even before people know who is in which section (partly out of tradition (section 1 is always X, section 2 is always Y, section 3/curriculum B students are always Z) but partly out of fun and partly out of an it's-just-easier-to-classify-500+people-this-way mentality)...other stuff but I'm too exhausted/bummed since my longer post got deleted.

I had a really positive experience. The faculty seemed down-to-earth and friendly, the people (both current and prospective students) were smart and enjoyable, and I just realy dig D.C. True, you can't take three steps without running into a lawyer, but that's a plus for me. Where else can you have an intelligent conversation about politics while getting hammered at a bar?

The alternative curriculum definately piqued my interest, as did the clinics. There's a certain electricity about being so close to the capitol, Supreme Court, etc. They really made it seem like there were some unparalleled opportunities at G'town, a point which I'm inclined to agree with.

Also, the female population was hot. There, I said it.

oh yeah - it was mentioned that Gtown is waiving the deposit for incoming students. Don't know if that's been mentioned yet but I thought it was a really nice gesture of good faith/trust.

How far out in advance to the post the detailed info for the ASWs? The next one is March 25th/26th but they don't have any other info up yet. I don't want to get stuck with a big airfare if the details come out just a couple of weeks beforehand.

The schedule of events is supposed to come out this month but it'll be the same basic schedule as the Jan one I assume... just with 3x the ppl.

Am I mistaken, or are they not offering lodging with a student for this one? I can't find anything about it on the website.

No lodging with students is offered for the March open house, unfortunately. I hosted two awesome prospectives for the early admit weekend in January and I would be more than willing to do it again, but for logistical reasons related to the timing of that event in relation to other ASWs, it's just not been something offered. I am actually on the organizing committee for this event (so you'll all most likely meet me) and I put in my two cents about extending lodging with students to prospectives, but the admissions team swears they haven't had much interest from your (prospectives') end in the past.

Have you received the tentative schedule of events yet? Our little committee just had a meeting today and I have the current breakdown. I can post it upon request... just keep in mind that things are tentative and may change a bit. The open house officially begins on Thursday at 3pm with the grand welcome, and that shouldn't change... events last through Friday afternoon, but if any or all of you want to stick around, I can definitely arrange more things to do. Barrister's Ball is that Saturday night, so Friday night probably won't be a noteworthy night out. Thursdays, however, tend to be super fun since every Thursday is bar review, which I can escort a group to if there's interest. Just be prepared for the inevitable suck of Friday morning breakfast at 8:30 or 9am should you decide to bar review with us.

Is anyone interested in sitting in on a class Thursday morning? There aren't classes for FT 1Ls on Fridays in the spring, so Thursday morning is really the only viable option (apart from an evening class Thursday or Friday), which would mean you'd have to arrive early and you'd probably have a bit of downtime before the event "officially" starts in the afternoon. But I anticipate a non-negligible level of interest. If I'm right, if it's something you want me to pursue, send me a message and I will try to make it a bit easier to arrange.

If any of you have questions or suggestions, please don't be shy. I'll try to be on TLS more frequently between now and the open house, but PM is definitely a more reliable way to get a response. I'm looking forward to showing you all around!

Awesome, then I'll tentatively plan to bring a group out to bar review! I'll plan to post more info here closer to the date and also make an announcement at one of the events.

The Friday night class is a part-time class, but it's all the same subject matter you'd be covering regardless of section or program. 1L classes are standard; PTers just have one less class each semester. Might be a slightly different vibe and the day professors are different from the night professors, but you should be able to get the idea since all 1L classes are taught by full professors (rather than adjunct profs). I just won't be particularly helpful in telling you anything about the profs since I don't know 'em.

If I can't make it to the ASW, do you think I should still try to make a visit during a later week? How good is Georgetown about giving tours and such to students outside of ASW visits? I'd really like to get a feel for the place, but the expense of travel is making it difficult.

Bought my plane tickets today. SO and I will be there Thursday, Friday, Saturday (of the ASW).

Any advice on cheap hotels close to Georgetown and a metroline; we won't have a car.

I've never been to DC, so any help is appreciated.

Galahad, I do tours pretty much on a weekly basis. You can arrange something at a more convenient time if that makes it more feasible.

Interminable, I got a huge deal last year on a hotel from Orbitz or Travelocity. It was a sick hotel (the Donovan House) and it was still expensive, but it was like half the price it should have been. Hotels in DC aren't cheap, period, but if you stay somewhere near the metro's red line, you could even stay in NoVa and be fine. In fact, that's probably the only way to get a place that's even remotely reasonable. Otherwise, anywhere near a metro stop should be fine, even if you have to make a transfer.

I'm working with Patrice from admissions to compile a list of available classes and number of guest seats available in those classes in signup format. We're also trying to do a live webcast in another room for anyone who doesn't get a spot in an observation (not anticipating this scenario to actually occur) and anyone who only wants to observe for a little bit (rather than sitting through a whole class, so you can leave without interrupting the class/professor). We'll send out an email to all the confirmed attendees probably the week before, so keep an eye on your inbox for something from us (and/or hit me up about 4-5 days before if you haven't heard anything from us by then). Yay! I get so dorky/excited about this stuff...
