Re: Miami this weekend!
If you're in the downtown area, you can find a ton of great restaurants and bars on Las Olas Blvd. and at Riverfront. They're practically connected and you'll be busy for the entire night. Riverfront probably has the highest concentration of post-college 20-somethings in broward county and none of the bars have covers. I recommend tarpon bend, dicey riley's, and automatic slims. Las Olas has a slightly older crowd (20s-40s) and is definitely more chill. Eat on las olas, party at riverfront.
edit: Hard Rock is in Hollywood, which is about 20 minutes away. They have a casino and lots of shops, good restaurants, bars, and clubs. Places to try: Gryphon and Pangea are pretty nice clubs (albeit a $20 cover), Murphy's Law is a fun irish bar, Jazziz is a cool jazz bar, and one of the bars has dueling pianos. If you love people watching, Hard Rock is perfect.

Also, for those of you who have never been to miami (and are not from a big city), drinks are $14 a pop. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Ft. Laudy is cheaper for those who will be staying in broward.

I have been to miami plently of times but have never been to a bar there. What is the average price of a regular beer? how about premium (i.e. new castle). Thanks!

Haha, party at hotel indigo!
My coworker (a U of M law grad) has talked me into renting a car, so I'm going to drive to the beach on Thursday if anyone's getting down there early and wants to hit the beach...holla!

Born and raised in Alaska. Was flying home from DC but got jacked due to the volcano erupting up there. So I sweet talked my way into a first class seat from Seattle to Ft. Laudy today and just got into the hotel with a voucher from Delta. Will be in SoBe tomorrow.TKM wrote:lion-o wrote:I'll be there Thursday. Looking at a 60 degree swing in weather...nice.

Re: Miami this weekend!
I'll be flying in from Los Angeles tomorrow evening and will be staying until Monday afternoon. This will be my first time visiting Miami so i'll be sure to take lots of pictures and notes and post them along with my thoughts on the school and Miami in general.
My trip was planned at the very last minute so I think I ended up getting hosed on airfare, car rental, and hotel. Oh well..... Just fyi for those who haven't booked a hotel yet, the cheapest rate I found on Priceline/Expedia/Orbitz for a hotel near school was $95 at the Extended Stay in Coral Gables. It's supposed to be in a decent area (fingers crossed).
On a brighter note it looks like a good weekend is ahead. It's always fun to explore a new city and meet new people. I'll definitely be going out at night and going to the beach. Any other suggestions on where to go/what to see in order to get a better feel for the city?
Btw, anyone going to hit up some of the WMC events? There are some killer line-ups at the clubs in Downtown and South Beach. Sorry, I'm a dj/music producer on the side and probably won't be able to resist

I'm heading there Friday afternoon until Sunday morning. Looking for a place to stay for ~ 30/night. If anyone needs a roommate, let me know. I'm renting a car down there so I guess I'd be able to drive around.

Re: Miami this weekend!
okay--i'm thinking about biting the bullet and paying the $$ for a visit to UM--but my only hang up is that i am on hold right now--before i make plans to go--do you think it would a wise idea to call the admissions and try to find out when they will be sending decision letters so that i don't pay the $$ to go then while im there have a decision letter delivered? any thoughs would be great!

I'm catching a red-eye tonight to Miami. I can't wait. I think I'll spend tomorrow checking out the city.
Does anyone know how extensive the "housing tour" is going to be?

Re: Miami this weekend!
I just booked my hotel (a little late). I'm only going to be half a mile from UM, and will have free shuttle service. I'll also be right next to metro rail, so I don't think I'll need to rent a car. $93.00/night which is reasonable for Miami.

I think it's pretty extensive.
FYI - my coworker who went to UM says you need to rent a car if you're planning on checking out the city and doing anything not in your hotel or on campus. It's not like NYC - you need a car to get around. I was planning on doing the shuttle & metro, too, but he advised against it.
I'll be there about 9 am tomorrow, and I'm getting a car. Let me know if you need a ride if you decide not to get a car!
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
