Basically you should bring them because they're so freaking adorable. But sure, expectations too.

Yeah, but his dad didn't get no respect while he was there. Let that be a lesson learned.naterj wrote:That kid from Back to School brought his dad to college with him and he ended up fine.

I wouldn't necessarily guarantee it. At the W&M accepted students' day, there were surprisingly plenty of parents/other relatives and it was not "awkwardness enhancer" at all...Dean Shealy even gave a shout out them!Dany wrote:My point is that while your wife was an "awkwardness preventer" I guarantee you parents will be "awkwardness enhancers."
LS is a major life decision, and if I were a parent, I'd be keenly interested in where my son or daughter was thinking about spending three years and potentially six figures of debt on...but I guess that's the Asian-ness in me.

I'm not saying parents aren't important. I can't wait for my parents to visit my law school over the summer with me and see where I'm so excited to go. I would never bring them to an admitted STUDENTS' function, however. Take them on their own trip.

I dunno, I think parents would make ASW seem normal. Without them it seems like a bunch of kids trying to play grownup and failing miserably at it. At least with parents around kids would be forced to accept their status as children.

Yeah, I would agree that it's not polite to bring relatives to ASDs unless they have been explicitly invited, hence why I didn't bring mine (they did see BC on a separate visit and have agreed to help me move in). But I do find it a bit arrogant to paint people who do as "babyish" or to look down on them. Nothing wrong with a parent showing interest in one of their child's most significant life decisions.Dany wrote:I'm not saying parents aren't important. There were tons of parents at my ASD, but it was billed as more of an open house than an ASD. If the school is okay with it, there's no reason not to bring parents - especially since most of the kids bringing parents are coming straight out of undergrad, and therefore are probably still stuck to the money teat.mettasutta wrote:Yeah, I would agree that it's not polite to bring relatives to ASDs unless they have been explicitly invited, hence why I didn't bring mine (they did see BC on a separate visit and have agreed to help me move in). Until you've been out of school, worked a professional job, and have not had to "borrow" money from your parents for at least a few years, you're still a kid. And if you're still a kid, your parents get to help you make decisions that affect them financially. This is the reason I brought my wife (because one must always know (and defer to) who holds the purse strings.)
ETA: No one's going to remember "that guy" who brought their parents anyway. There's a hundred or more prospective students at those things, and even if you meet every single one, you're not going to remember much about them months later.

I don't think there is anything wrong with bringing your parents to visit schools. I live half way across the country from my parents, haven't lived near them for 9 years, haven't had financial support from them for 5 years and my mom (and maybe Dad too) is going to fly down and meet me at one of the schools I'm considering. She has the time off of work to take, we don't get to see each other that often, and I would rather have her with me than be alone for 3 days down there. It's really not a big deal.

Whenever I'm about to do something, I think, “Would an idiot do that?” and if they would, I do not do that thing.
Using above method, I would not bring my parents to an ASW.
