This also affects the rankings, or lack thereof. Which is awesome, because students are less prone to compete.

I am not the competitive type. I like this all very, very much.
Top 10% get "high honors"
Next 30% get "honors"
and next 60% get "pass"*

*Some students can get something like restricted credit or substandard pass but this is very rare (I imagine you have to really blow nuts to get this).

Also, I think I remember being told that rankings are only given to those applying for clerkships and that students must swear not to tell anyone their ranking.

In since phone call 12/3. I love Berkeley and was super thrilled to get in this early! Can definitely see myself heading here next year :) looking forward to ASW!

Are they still sending out admissions packets this year? I know they said they were going paperless, but was that just to notify people of admissions decisions?

From the email we got this afternoon:

"Congratulations! I am delighted to invite you to become a member of the student body at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall). A letter formally admitting you to the entering class of 2010 will be mailed to your current address shortly."

Do a lot of schools help pay for ASW transportation? Or just Boalt?

That's pretty freakin' awesome because I have no $$$

I got home late, having gone out to dinner with friends after an exhausting day of work during which I sporadically checked a few status checkers. "Why even check Berkeley?" I asked myself, "There's no way they'd notify me this early."

Then I opened my email.

One of the best days ever.

D'oh- must have skimmed over that important tidbit in my excitement!

hey everyone, I am hoping to be able to join you guys in celebration soon. I just had a question cause Im going crazy waiting. Did your status checker say File Under Review the whole time and then you got the call/email notification or did it change to anything else (i thought i remembered someone saying it tells you when it goes to the committee or something)??

It has changed to Admitted! but anyone who gets a call will get it before that happens. I think emails come at approximately the same time as the status checker change.

I didn't realize that Boalt's selectivity index is fourth only to HYS. 8)

They also said on the application itself that they would be going paperless with the exception of the welcome packet, so hopefully it will include at least a viewbook or something.

Hopefully more than a viewbook...it's really nice but I've already read through it cover-to-cover!

Opening line: "Law school is hard. But it doesn't have to be brutal."

Amen.

So antsy for the letter/packet. I know Berk is all green n' shit, but can't we get a big fat wad of paper just this once?

In via phone call on 12/03.

One of my top choices! I can’t wait to visit in April.

Is it just me or were there others who felt so flabbergasted during the phone call that they were rendered inarticulate. I apologized at the end of our conversation for all of my stuttering and he laughed it off, lol. Seems like a very nice guy over the phone.

I was really giddy. And I was, honestly, completely in shock. I kept laughing and didn't have much to say. I wasn't expecting an acceptance at all -- much less so early in the cycle. I apologized as well; I think he's used to it.

I cant wait to meet you guys as well during ASW! I've never been to California before, much less thought I would ever have a chance at a school like Berkeley, so this is going to be really special for me! I got the phone call not too long ago as well and I was rendered speechless, besides the ton of "OMG" remarks that must have rushed out of me haha..

CAN'T WAIT TO VISIT THOUGH!!!!!!!!!

by the way, is anyone else concerned as to how they'll afford this? I know loans are out there and all but it's really scary considering I project myself to be in 300k of debt by the time Im out of there (assuming I decide to attend). the site mentioned a new loan assistance repayment program that is "the most generous" in the country. anyone have any details about it? read up on it but seemed vague and parts of the site werent completed.

Was expecting a letter today because my status checker said something was put in the mail yesterday...no such luck, though. It had better come tomorrow.

Very. I don't have UG debt, but the tuition hikes in CA are pretty scary to me.

As long as they don't axe their amazing LRAP, I'm not too worried.

It's going to be fucking expensive, but at the end of the day all of the T14's are in the same ballpark, more or less.

Or so I sense. I would actually love for someone to add up the tuition + COL of the T14's. I wonder what the discrepancy is over three years?

But I'm already in California, so I'll get in-state for my duration at Berkeley if I matriculate. I think that's around 10 grand saved right off the bat compared to out-of-state folk.

From what I remember from my visit, these were some of the features which made Boalt's LRAP particularly generous. Some of these traits may be shared with other schools, but I think the fact that Berkeley boasts them all makes its LRAP one of the best around.

- The income cap is much higher than other schools. I think it's $58,000 -- so if you make less than that in a public interest/non-profit job, Boalt will pay 100% of your loan for each year that you're there. I know many other T14 schools have much lower caps -- as low as $35k or thereabouts.

- Even if you exceed the income cap in a public interest/non-profit capacity, they will still help. They don't just cut you off...they start to vary the percentage they'll cover by how much above the cap you make.

- I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that the Admissions rep told me that if you work in public interest for 10 full years after law school, they will automatically clear ALL remaining debt after 10 years. I specifically remember hearing this, but it's not anywhere on the LRAP site that I can find, so I'm not positive.

- You can leave the LRAP and come back. You're still eligible even if you don't take a PI job straight out of school. You could work in a firm for 6 years and then take a government job and the LRAP would still kick in at that time.

Any current Boalt students (or all-around Boalt knowledgeables) please correct me or chime in!

Hey All

Just in via email. CAL is definitely high on my list barring Stanford. I just came back from NYC and it was a reality check haha. Don't want to leave Cali.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
