Anybody know if this award is guaranteed to be renewed in the '11-'12 and '12-'13 years (in other words, is it really an offer of $48,000, but over three years)? Moreover, you guys know if this is a need or merit-based award, or a combo of the two (kind of like how Chicago combines them, or is it like UCLA where the two are completely separate); should I expect to receive an additional award from Berkeley? Thanks :).
I didn't even know about "Bearfacts," but I just google'd it and was able to log on with my CalNetID (the same one we use for the admitted students site). Anyway, my scholarship, which Berkeley emailed me about last week, shows up.

I bet that Berkeley will soon email you with the terms of your scholarship. Mine was purely merit-based and guaranteed for all three years; your situation could be different. Whatever the terms, congratulations on getting some money!

Withdrew today after being admitted back in December. I hope my spot goes to someone who is as happy to receive the call from Dean Tom as I was.

I'd like to know this as well. When I got the waitlist email from Dean Tom, the letter said that rankings will be released by mid-May. The FAQ attachment however, said that we should call or email by May 1st if we wanted to know our quartile. I'm a little confused. I think I will call Berkeley today.

If you want to know for sure, call and ask. My guess, though, is that it means that you are ranked in the top 25% of those on the waitlist, meaning that you are among the group that is most likely to get in.

I'd call. Now that deposit deadlines have passed at many schools, I bet that Berkeley has a general idea of how deep they'll dip into the waitlist.

I don't think it would be a terribly bad idea to visit at this point. Dean Tom's letter did say specifically that there is nothing that can be done to affect our place on the waitlist. But I don't see how it can hurt to continue to show interest in the school by visiting.

First quartile here as well. :)

I'm in the 4th quartile. Ha.

I wouldn't go to Berkeley at sticker anyway, but I guess now I know I won't be confronted with that decision. Michigan it is!

any excuse for a trip to the bay area! thanks to everyone who withdrew hahaha, i hope that means good news for me..

i will call on my lunchbreak i think and see if i can coerce anyone into giving me more info on the waitlist situation.

first quartile could mean that we are #1 or #75...seems like a big difference. do they ever dip that far into the list? anyone know how far berkeley has pulled from the wl in recent years?

i don't think boalt has dipped too far into the waitlist. last year, they only took 12. here's the interview with dean tom which i found pretty useful

TLS: What is the size of Boalt’s waitlist?

Dean Tom: “Usually the waitlist is anywhere from 200-300 applicants who are ranked by the admissions committee.”

TLS: Roughly how deep into the waitlist does Boalt go?

Dean Tom: “This year, not very deep. I think the deepest we’ve ever gone was a number of years back, we took about 40 people.”

TLS: Wow, not many.

Dean Tom: “No. This year it was 12. But, it varies from year to year, and this year, because I knew how good the people were on the waiting list, I intentionally admitted fewer people up front, thinking that I could go deeper into the waiting list. But, I wasn’t able to, because the yield rate was very high. A large percentage of accepted applicants decided to attend. ”

TLS: Good for Boalt.

Dean Tom: “Yeah, well, so much for my big idea.”

TLS: If one ends up on the waitlist, is there anything that you can do to increase the likelihood of admission?

Dean Tom: “No. There’s nothing you can do to improve your chances. And we tell people that when we inform them that they are on the waiting list. The waiting list is ranked by the faculty at the time the decision is made to waitlist them, because we believe the information is fresh in their mind and they’re best able to assign a waitlist ranking at that time.”

TLS: So saying that you’re still interested doesn’t matter?

Dean Tom: “Well, that helps us, but it’s not going to improve your chances or position.”

but how many people did they go through on the waitlist to actually get those 12 people to attend? I assume a large number of people who remain on the waitlist would not actually accept if offered...

optimism ftw

haha good call. here's to hoping! :P

i also visited boalt yesterday, and though the facilities aren't as nice as others i've seen, i would give nearly anything to go there! cheeseboard, strada, gypsys everyday, that would be the life *sigh*

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
