Re: Berkeley 2010
No one should give up hope! It's early December, people! MOST admittances come later in the cycle after lots more review, correct?
Also, take solace in the fact that Boalt's more "holistic" admissions approach (which I feel has been exhibited by my acceptance as well as lots of others in this thread with non-T6 numbers) means, by definition, that you can't be upset about people being admitted who applied later (or with lower numbers) than you.
And finally: the tuition hike is bad. Really bad. This perhaps means they will admit more folks than usual this year, because their selectivity rating will probably have to drop, considering debt aversion.

No, I'm not excited for you to own me. Wouldn't mind getting into Stanford or Columbia.crackberry wrote: For some reason I think you and I are ending up at the same school. Except I'll be a 3L when you're a 1L and will totally own you. The death sentence was only the beginning...
But as for your owning of me--I am banking on the fact that your old friends from Stanford will behead you for sleeping with the enemy before you get the chance to berate me as a 3L.

Is Stanford your #1? I think it still is for me, though Palo Alto's suburban-feel isn't nearly as cool as Berktown homeless-people-sleeping-on-Telegraph atmosphere. I haven't spent much time in Palo Alto, though. Are there any cool bars or anything or do you guys just go to the Gilroy Garlic Festival in the summers (which rocked, btw).crackberry wrote:Yeah I may have to sleep with one eye open if I end up going to Boalt.VoidSix wrote:No, I'm not excited for you to own me. Yeah Stanford is still my #1, but I will be visiting Boalt no matter what happens.VoidSix wrote:Is Stanford your #1? Palo Alto bars aren't great. It's fine for UGs because it centralizes the party scene on campus, but for grads I imagine it's not awesome. NOLA is alright and Old Pro is actually a really good sports bar. Some people swear by Rudy's but I think it's garbage and there's always a $5 cover for what would be a mediocre-at-best bar in any other city.
San Francisco is a pain to get to if you don't have a car or a friend who lives in the city because the CalTrain stops at midnight on weekend nights (whereas BART, which you can take to SF from Berkeley) runs until at least 1 am.
That said, Stanford's location on the peninsula is arguably better than Berkeley's. It's not as brutally hot in the summer and yet the temperature is perfect year round (minus December-February when it rains a fair amount). You're closer to better beaches at Stanford than you are at Berkeley.
Overall, I think Berkeley is a way better school atmosphere-wise for grad students but that Stanford is in a better location. That, combined with the fact that SLS is SLS makes Stanford my number 1.

You mean you "Boalt"ed out of class haha.bluepepsi wrote:In at Berkeley via phone call from Dean Tom at around 2PM west coast! He called right before class but when I saw "510" I bolted out of class to take the call.
I don't know what's with my amazing luck this week... my stats are not Berkerley-worthy. Well, not the LSAT at least.

I can imagine Dean Tom calling all the peeps still in college and avoiding those who are working full time, no?

Yeah. Pretty much what I figured. I don't think anything could sway me from Stanford if I actually got in. Spent a day there over the summer and I was pretty amazed. I played on the piano that is either in the law building or right next to it (not sure where the border starts), it was a good time.
Let's hope we both get calls from Faye Deal in the next few weeks. I wonder if being alumni helps you? Probably can't hurt. First group of acceptances last year was 12-17. Another date to obsess about.

So, does it say on the status checker when you made it to faculty review? Does it change?Veritas wrote:I just hope to make it to faculty review.

I thought I read somewhere that they just send an e-mail to notify those selected for faculty review, but I'm not 100% sure.SanBun wrote:So, does it say on the status checker when you made it to faculty review? Does it change?Veritas wrote:I just hope to make it to faculty review.

A little food for thought.

I sure hope not, because I've also been under review for a month. I thought this was normal, considering how that they've only just started giving out decisions.SanBun wrote:Since I've been UR for a month now, does that mean I'm pretty much out? damn.Veritas wrote:Yes, I believe they notify you.Eigenvalue A wrote:I thought I read somewhere that they just send an e-mail to notify those selected for faculty review, but I'm not 100% sure.SanBun wrote: So, does it say on the status checker when you made it to faculty review? I'm guessing no one has heard yet about scholarships? I got the fly out offer, so hopefully that's a good sign. I'd love to go to Berkeley, but the proposed tuition increases are insane.

I don't know if people have seen this, but from the Boalt admissions twitter:
BoaltAdmissions
It's true - 'tis the season. Dean Tom is personally calling **some** admitted students to congratulate them. But he can't call you all!
What is the significance of this??

It presumably means that some emails will be sent to students who have been admitted but are not receiving phone calls. They sound like they are enjoying teasing us, I must say.jimmyd11011 wrote:I don't know if people have seen this, but from the Boalt admissions twitter:
