HYP SPCC/Caltech,MIT
You are one of the idiots I am describing.
To say that Stanford and Penn are in the same tier reeks of psychosis.
Wow, really? Cause that's not what these rankings would suggest:
http://www.usnews.com/articles/educatio ... p-200.html (Penn 12 in the world; Stanford 16)
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... s-rankings
(Penn and Stanford tied for 4th in the country)
I didn't go to either school, but seriously?!?

You are clearly using USNWR UG rankings, which are meaningless. Some of the criteria they use - alumni giving, for one - are really ridiculous and should not be used to judge a school. Look at the average SAT scores, acceptance rates, etc. of the two schools. It's not even close (relatively speaking). Penn is basically the school that rich NYC prep school kids who can't cut it at HYP go to. None of those kids even apply to Stanford because 1) they can't get in and 2) they think California is another country.
TBF, east coast and midwest elites who can't get into HYP go to Amherst, Bates, Williams, Reed and other prestigious LACs.

Went. GO BEARS.
You know what's funny about the Stanford-Cal rivalry? We don't hate Cal at all. Sure, we want to beat Cal in sports, but we don't hate Cal as an institution. I get the sense that a lot of Cal kids HATE Stanford. They think Stanford students are pampered rich kids who are overpaying for their educations (which may or may not be true in some cases) and there is actually a visceral hatred between the two. Maybe it stems from Cal kids applying and not getting into Stanford for UG, I don't know, but I've definitely noticed this. I actually love Cal and would have loved to go to Boalt if I hadn't gotten in to Stanford.

US News rankings for UG are absurd. WUSTL is nowhere near as good as its ranking suggests, for instance. Schools can manipulate those rankings like crazy. That's exactly what schools like Penn, Duke and WUSTL do.

And a whole host of other schools including Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, WUSTL, etc. But Penn is one of those.

Well, on that we do agree. Personally I'd rather beat SC and lose to Cal than beat Cal and lose to SC.

Exactly. Although I like SC too. I guess that I don't dislike any California school, really.

I root for every Pac 10 team whenever they play non-Pac 10 teams. Obviously I root for Stanford over any other Pac 10 team. Within the Pac 10, for me, it's Stanford>Cal>Oregon>USC>UCLA>Oregon State>UW>Arizona>ASU>Wash. St.

Yale, MIT, and Harvard have much greater recognition worldwide than Stanford does though...
Actually Berkeley has more recognition in some parts than Stanford.

Harvard definitely does. I disagree about Yale, MIT and Berkeley though. Especially in Asia, it's Harvard/Stanford at the top. Then the rest. Europe probably prefers Yale to Stanford, granted.

I think Stamford has been rising in popularity ever since The Office put one of their branches there.

Really? I automatically think anyone from USC is a tool until they prove otherwise. One of the perils of living in the Marina.

That branch closed in like Season 3 when Josh bolted for Staples.

Ehhhh I was in Asia... people don't always know Stanford... they do know Harvard/Yale and usually MIT. Only those with connections to Cali know how good Stanford is.

I know. I think their 2010 ranking was still artificially inflated by the aftereffects, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped from #3 this year.

While I am as guilty of this as anyone, speaking in absolutes in this kind of debate is stupid. Stanford is not a regional school. That's an absurd comment. Lay people (doormen, garbage collectors, etc.) might not know how good Stanford is, but people who are smart certainly do - no matter where they live.

DF I was waiting for you to respond to an earlier post of mine but you never did. You said the only place Berkeley>Chicago is weather/location. I said IP, PI and LRAP. Agree?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
