How do we know it'll be this thu/fri or the next? Just general patterns from last year's threads?

Status checker will change to decision pending and then calls will start rolling out.psychomohel wrote:I believe Chicago calls admitted students.AceintheWhole wrote:What will we know this Thurs/Fri?hopefulundergrad wrote:EDers... it'll be this Thurs/Fri or next Thurs/Fri. Anyone else excited? I'm not expecting to get in (most likely held/deferred to the RD pool) but it's still good know that I WILL receive a decision from another school soon.
Will they actually call people? Or will our status checker just change, and we'll have to wait for mail?

Any idea rejections/deferrals are snail mail or email? I won't have access to my mailbox for 3 weeks over Xmas break, and I'd rather get the bad news when I can drink at whatever time and in whatever quantity I want.

Snail mail last cycle. I would prefer email but who knows.ontologyfail wrote:Any idea rejections/deferrals are snail mail or email? I won't have access to my mailbox for 3 weeks over Xmas break, and I'd rather get the bad news when I can drink at whatever time and in whatever quantity I want.

if excited = terrified or bewildered, then yes, i'm excited. it would be great to get an ED acceptance right before finals weekhopefulundergrad wrote:EDers... it'll be this Thurs/Fri or next Thurs/Fri. im sure this has been asked somewhere else, but why do we have thursday/friday next week as the first time we might hear as ED? lsn seems to indicate that they never release ED decisions before the 17th or so...

Any insight on the impact of being a reapplicant? Last year with my astonishingly horrendous LSAT score I applied to four tier-2 schools and.... UChicago. Don't ask me why, lol.
Just wondering if that's a point for (show of interest?) or against (reject me once, reject me again) me. Maybe it's just neutral.

I'd like to think that it's a positive, showing your continued commitment to the school despite their rebuff. But I honestly don't know. In undergrad, reapplications were not successful for me.LieutKaffee wrote:Any insight on the impact of being a reapplicant? How do you reapply place for undergrad? Did you take a year off b/t HS and UG? Or do u mean applying as a transfer?managamy wrote:I'd like to think that it's a positive, showing your continued commitment to the school despite their rebuff. But I honestly don't know. I took a year off after I struck out completely on my first cycle. My second cycle didn't go particularly well overall either; my current UG was my only top-level acceptance.hopefulundergrad wrote:How do you reapply place for undergrad? Really? I only know one person from my entire 350 class who didn't go directly to UG after HS but he went to a post-secondary program by choice so he could get recruited for lax. Stanford was you're only top level acceptance? That's pretty damn good.managamy wrote:I took a year off after I struck out completely on my first cycle. I got into UChicago UG and it was the only T10 school I applied to but back than I had no idea about the importance of UG institutions and didn't realize how good of a school Chicago was. Still regret the decision to go elsewhere.

Interesting. I had a few options in the top 15 or 20, but decided on a school in the 50s, and I actually don't regret my decision. What is this "importance of UG" you have since discovered? I have been surprised (pleasantly, I guess, considering my unimpressive credentials) by the emphasis on GPA without regard to UG institution in the LS application game.hopefulundergrad wrote:

I meant for anything but professional/grad school admissions. It's nearly impossible to get any prestigious and well-paying job in business, consulting, etc w/o Ivy, Top LAC (i.e. Amhest), Public Ivy (i.e. Michigan), Top Private (i.e MIT, Duke, Chicago) UG.LieutKaffee wrote:Interesting. Edit: YLS seems to be pretty snobby w/ their strong preference for strong UGs.

Hey, Kaffee, I saw on your LSN profile that you're from Oregon too. You go to Reed?

No, I did not. After seeing some UG banter on this site, I think I may have misclassified my UG institution as a "Private LAC." My school was private, and its curriculum is firmly grounded on the liberal arts philosophy, but it's called "University" and doesn't show up on USNWR's LAC rankings.echoi wrote:Hey, Kaffee, I saw on your LSN profile that you're from Oregon too. Anyway, I went to Pepperdine.

Yes, this experience is why I tried to offer some perspective over on the Pessimism thread, where they continue to believe that I have led a charmed life since an infancy swaddled in golden diapers. My pre-university education was highly unconventional, too unconventional for the Ivies I believe. PM me if you want details.5ky wrote:Really? I just hope there were people who looked down on you for taking a year off after high school. If that's all I knew about a person, I might suspect they weren't exactly "going places." Having a super-perfect GPA from friggin' Stanford and a 99.9999999th percentile score on the LSAT is a decent situation to end up in.managamy wrote:Yes, this experience is why I tried to offer some perspective over on the Pessimism thread, where they continue to believe that I have led a charmed life since an infancy swaddled in golden diapers. There definitely were such people. If it were all I knew about someone, I would also not think much of their motivation, etc. I had no choice, however, since I had no acceptances from my first cycle.LieutKaffee wrote:

Now, I must admit that I am enjoying the process of proving all of their doubts and suspicions wrong. It's a very rewarding feeling.

I think the problem might still be that it's a little hard to understand how your UG app experience was traumatizing if you ultimately got into Stanford, one of the most selective schools in the country and one that many would kill to go to, regardless of what may have happened along the way... I just hope by referring to it as your only "top level" acceptance you don't mean only acceptance within HPYS.managamy wrote:There definitely were such people.
