Re: decision at duke
Maybe my ultra-quick acceptance to UVa made my expectations a bit unrealistic. How did I get in to UVa and get WL'd at Duke? WTF?

If I understand the process correctly, they usually don't offer you an outright acceptance. They call and ask "If we take you off the waitlist, will you accept?" Often, you have to decide within a day or less. If you say no, then they don't offer you an acceptance so it doesn't affect their yield.WIdan wrote:Waitlist. 3.59, 170.
I'll be withdrawing, although I would like to get accepted off the waitlist and hurt their pretty little yield. (Really I'm not bitter, I just don't like what I've been seeing from Duke in this whole process.)

So...if I understand correctly, if I send a Loci with not only my full intention of attending, but maybe my first born, they'll be happy to bump me up?

I'm sure the first part will help. Leave out the first born though. They don't want to be seen as a "legacy" school.gobotz wrote:Unemployed wrote:If I understand the process correctly, they usually don't offer you an outright acceptance. Supposedly they dug into it pretty far last year, at least according to the buzz on these boards.thesouthside wrote:Oh boy. Well congrats to you!loro-rojo wrote:Wow!! Do you guys want to talk about a miracle?!

Re: decision at duke
Durham's not too bad.. the surrounding cities are probably more entertaining and conducive to a healthy social life. I went to school in Raleigh and I rarely heard of people going to Durham to do much of anything, Chapel Hill was a much more popular spot.. From Durham it's a short 10-15 minute drive on a pleasant highway where you're not going to get stressed out by crazy-ridiculous traffic or nutso drivers.. overall Durham not so hot, but it's situated in an area where there's plenty to do..
that said, i recommend that all of you withdraw from the waitlist and from your acceptances.. thanks!

Re: decision at duke
Having gone to undergrad there, I can attest that it's not really a problem. Duke is in the north-west-central part of town. The gangs are only a problem in the eastern and parts of the central-southern areas of town. But you never have to go to those parts of town, so worry not. Durham's "downtown" looks like a ghost-town during night (as a result of ongoing construction and existing laws), so there's not much to do there. The places to go are just off of East Campus (which is a poor part of town, but not the gang part), a nice mall at the very southern tip of the city, a series of strip malls along 15-501 between Durham and Chapel Hill, and Chapel Hill itself. Undergrad's are more walled in by campus, but I volunteered at an after school program and coached a sport at a Durham public high school and never ran into the slightest of problems (though admitedly, kids in gangs probably don't have time for after school programs and probably don't play the sport I coached).thesouthside wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAw_9RsjfMomvk216 wrote:Durham? Honestly, as long as you (a) aren't stupid and don't go for a jog around a bad part of town while it's dark, and (b) make sure you find an apartment north or west/southwest of the campus, you'll be A-OK.

That's actually really refreshing to hear. The first time I watched that vid I laughed, the second time I got a little worried. Given Dukes reputation I would assume at the least there would be things that are safe to do on campus.BD_2006 wrote:Having gone to undergrad there, I can attest that it's not really a problem. Priority Reserve WL here as well. For those of you who have Duke as your #1, I'll be withdrawing.

What is this 'priority reserve' WL? The WL FAQ says they don't use a ranking system within the WL.quakeroat wrote:Priority Reserve WL here as well. For those of you who have Duke as your #1, I'll be withdrawing.

Applicants to Duke Law this year make up the largest and strongest group we have received to date. In addition, because we enroll 40-45 students in our summer-starting dual degree programs, there are only160 seats in our fall JD class. Therefore, this year’s application process is exceptionally competitive. However, we will closely monitor the state of our class over the next several weeks, and hope that we will have the opportunity to extend offers of admission to candidates on the Priority Reserve list.

Thank you for applying to Duke Law School. We have completed a thorough review of your application and would like to offer you a spot on our Priority Reserve list for the fall 2009 entering class.EyeBeeM wrote:What is this 'priority reserve' WL? - it doesn't say waitlist anywhere in the email so maybe thats how they say that they don't rank it?
