Hi friends! I know I have like a 0% chance at Stanford (my app was like a ~shoot for the stars~ situation tbh) but I'm curious for shits and gigs, what benefit/drawback is there to having family that graduated from Stanford? My cousin got his JD there a few years ago so I included that in the app but I was kind of curious what purpose it might serve. Any insight would be delightful! Thanks!

I would imagine it's for the same reason that a lot of undergrad institutions ask undergrads about relatives who are alumni: Admitting legacies helps to keep the alumni base happy (i.e., willing to keep donating every year), and also lends to the sense of community (particularly, an inter-generational community) at a school. The latter of these factors seems especially in keeping with SLS's emphasis on Stanford-specific LORs--they appear to care a lot about bringing in students who come in with some knowledge of the culture of SLS, and who can be vouched for (by alums) as good potential fits for that culture.

All that being said, my uncle went to SLS in the 70's, and I anticipate that that'll give me zero advantage in the admissions process haha.

Dag nabbit I worked for a lawyer that went to Stanford (undergrad though) and I didn't ask him to write a LOR because he wrote one for my Fulbright and I didn't want to bug him again because he's rad as hell. Damn #damn. This is VERY informative though, thank you so so much for taking the time to respond!

Quoting hiltopp01's post in the median thread:

Class of 2019 medians:

LSAT: 168 (-1); 171 (0); 173 (0)
GPA: 3.75 (-.03); 3.87 (-.02); 3.95 (-.02)

Falling stats make me happy.

Just submitted an app on a whim because of a dream I had last night. GPA is below 25th, and my LSAT is between 25th and median, so....yeah, probably just wasted $130.

Both the Cubs and the Cavs beat their way back from 3-1 deficits to win championships in 2016. It's the year of the underdog and if that's not a sign for you to apply idk what is.

When I get that inevitable ding, I'm going to take my grievances to Twitter:

"Crooked Stanford is irrelevant school full of losers and haters. I am too successful to go there. Sad!"

With falling scores @ S and according to Spivey (so far), I decided to bite the bullet and apply. Checking in.

What do you mean according to Spivey? What have you learned about SLS from Spivey?

Nothing about SLS according to him, but he released LSAT data up to this point, today.

I think December is usually considered "on time." After Christmas is considered late. But also Stanford is a total black box, so who even knows.

Checking in! Not a stellar candidate numerically by any means (GPA .1 below 25% & 25%<LSAT<50%), but I'm hoping my softs and work experience help strengthen my candidacy :| Submitted everything else around Halloween, but for some reason I just waited on Stanford.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
