Based on what I was told by my interviewer, the adcomm meets in January to make decisions, and then they release those decisions at some later date. This is purely speculation, but my guess would be, based on their response to you, they've already made a decision on you, in which case I would reconsider asking them to hold your application. At this point in the process they're probably not going to ding anyone, so the decision is either admit or WL. If the former, you're good already; if the latter, then they're "holding" your application anyways. By March when you get your new score, you'll still be negotiating/getting scholarship offers anyways.
So basically, I'd say wait and see how it plays out with Columbia. I don't think you have much to lose.
What's your reasoning behind the bolded portion?

Re: Columbia c/o 2020 applicants (2016-2017)
If they were going to deny/waitlist do you think they would ask you why it should be held? It would seem rather obvious to them: you're application is too weak for Columbia. Unless it's standard operating procedure to ask I would think you're in but that's just my thinking.airwrecka wrote:I have a 170 right now, so I'm not in a terrible place, but not in an awesome one, either. I wasn't actually going to hold my app, but then I freaked and second-guessed myself this weekend and emailed them asking it to hold it. If I change my mind and decide to proceed with my current score, should I just say that in response to the email? Like "Upon further consideration, I don't want you to hold my application. Please make a decision as the admissions dept sees fit."?forum_user wrote:This is interesting. What are your chances according to mylsn?airwrecka wrote: Any help is much appreciated!!!

After your replied, I did a quick search of LSN from last cycle and the first rejection I saw didn't happen until February, so I think you might be right.forum_user wrote:Guessing, supported by a cursory glance at last year's thread around this time. Thanks for the feedback! Now that a few people have told me this, I think I agree. I just can't see a reason they would ask if they knew they wanted to reject me lol.CPA-->JD wrote: If they were going to deny/waitlist do you think they would ask you why it should be held? Okay I guess I'd give your elaboration of why you'd want them to wait, and then maybe throw in a line that's like "I just wanted to make the admissions committee aware of my plans to retake, but if you believe you have sufficient information to render a decision at this time, please do not let me prevent you from doing so."airwrecka wrote:and to specifically answer your question, mylsn puts me at about a 45% chance of admission with the 170forum_user wrote:This is interesting. Idk this could be really bad advice, and I'm not at all qualified to really help you. This is a little bit of a pickle, but I don't think you'll really hurt yourself either way. Best of luck!

Peeked at LSN and saw one reject in December last cycle, but it seemed to be random. The rest started early-/mid-February. Waitlisted applicants also seemed to start mostly early-/mid-February, with a few December exceptions.airwrecka wrote:After your replied, I did a quick search of LSN from last cycle and the first rejection I saw didn't happen until February, so I think you might be right.forum_user wrote:Guessing, supported by a cursory glance at last year's thread around this time. Re: Columbia c/o 2020 applicants (2016-2017)
I'm guessing they asked because Columbia's policy is that they only consider February LSAT scores from candidates who petition for specific approval before January 1st. I think they're basically asking for you to submit a "petition," as it is against their normal policy. From FAQ:
"For the 2016-2017 admissions cycle, we will consider scores from the February 2017 LSAT from candidates who petition in writing and receive confirmation of petition approval by January 1, 2017. Petitions for 2017 February LSAT score consideration should be emailed to admissions@law.columbia.edu. As we have in past cycles, the Admissions Committee strongly encourages applicants to take the LSAT no later than the December test administration and to complete their applications earlier rather than later in the cycle."
Asking them to consider Feb LSAT for scholarship negotiations or in the event of a WL is pretty different than asking them to wait for it to make an admissions decision.

Re: Columbia c/o 2020 applicants (2016-2017)
Hmmmm shoot I missed this. Probably because I didn't decide to retake in February until way after I submitted my app. Do you think it will hurt my app if I change my mind and ask them not to hold it any more, after I have asked? I know I'm sounding paranoid but obviously Columbia is a great school and one of my top choices, so I don't want to mess this up!Anon.y.mousse. wrote:I'm guessing they asked because Columbia's policy is that they only consider February LSAT scores from candidates who petition for specific approval before January 1st.
