In this scenario I think double depositing makes sense, but eating that deposit loss hurts. Hopefully things work out for you.thatblondegirl wrote:I'm being forced into a double deposit situation since the school never responded to my deposit extension request. I'd say do what you have to do.

+1 to being ready for a change but also to the absolute fear of going from salary to debt.TexasENG wrote:Same here, if I wasn't leaving for school I would be moving on into another position. As a K-JD it's very stressful to discuss my decision with my parents who have lived in my hometown for almost all of their lives and don't see why I would go across the country for law school and take on some debt while doing so. My rationale that it is far better for my career goals to attend a school out of state seems to fall on deaf ears a lot of the time. Plus as the youngest of their children I'm sure they're dealing with some complex emotions as I am currently the only child still in the same state, and am about to go further away than any of the others. Can't please everyone though, sorry mom and dad.

Re: TLS c/o 2020 Applicants
My family made a drastic jump from working class to middle class while I was in high school, and things definitely changed between the two sets of circumstances. I feel like it kinda screwed me on need based aid for UG and now law school because they don't have any savings relative to their new higher salaries, but that's a separate issue. I also feel weird breaking the cycle of doing manual labor jobs (technically my older sister beat me to the punch), and being one of few people from my hometown that will not be there forever (all but one of my friends has returned there). I will definitely miss the closeness of long-term bonds, but I'm excited to be moving away to an area that I like more.
I feel really bad for my parents right now. My sister just got a job out west, so instead of a long drive away she'll be a flight away. And my brother just let them know that he is moving out of their house finally, but going to live with his friend in Florida. Couple that with the knowledge that I was already going to be leaving the state and they are absolutely crushed right now. I've also had to explain to them that law students work real jobs in areas that they want to work after graduating so I will not be moving home with them ever again unless I'm a complete failure. Being a parent must suck

Also the youngest in my family from a tiny town, brother and sister just announced they're moving far away right before I do. That's gotta be rough. They kinda didn't get until recently why I would turn down a full ride to my state flagship for a t10. I feel terrible. But it's whatevvs. They're definitely pushing for the 3 hour drive away over the 10 hour drive now, even though it's really expensive (and don't even get me started on how my mom reacted to my best option for awhile being in California)jstans wrote:As a K-JD it's very stressful to discuss my decision with my parents who have lived in my hometown for almost all of their lives and don't see why I would go across the country for law school and take on some debt while doing so. I've already lived with them to save up money for school for the last 3 years. Studying for the LSAT was a good test to see if it would work for me.gwillygecko wrote:i wouldnt blame someone for not doing it, but with nyc rent being what it is, id prolly commute if i couldTexasENG wrote:Hour long commute would be brutal 1L (plus parents...)Keilz wrote:If I get into a NYC school my parents keep asking if I will commute. I think a big difference for me is that I have a very young teen sister so it's not like I would be chillaxin at home with my calm unstressed parents, but if my parents were retired and alone I could totally see it being a good option.

Re: TLS c/o 2020 Applicants
Turned down my flagship, and am likely about to turn around a near full-ride at a significantly higher ranked school that places well in my home state. On the fence about this second action, but I think the highest ranked school with better outcomes is worth it, despite the cost. I think parents were of the mindset that I would attend the state flagship or my reach school in my region, which I was WL'd by. The thought of me attending somewhere else even further away shocked them, but I think they'll come around more once that deposit deadline happens.chargers21 wrote:Also the youngest in my family from a tiny town, brother and sister just announced they're moving far away right before I do. Re: TLS c/o 2020 Applicants
I'm also really scared of not working/making money but I honestly have no desire to work during 1L. With all of the horror stories i've heard and knowing how important grades/ranking can be, I just want to focus on school.
I'll be commuting to school. The commute time is actually a little over an hour but most of it will be spent on a train. In my case, I think it will be actually good productive study time. That being said, I live with my SO (who can't move much closer to the city due to his work). I wouldn't live with parents and commute...if that was my option I would probably suck it up and just move closer too

I'll give a +1; We aren't crazy wealthy or anything, but are well-off enough that I've lived a pretty much worry-free life (monetary wise), and that's about as much as you can ask for, imo. I even threw this into my PS that while I haven't had much reason to branch out (travel, see/experience different economic backgrounds) I have done it. I'm definitely grateful every day for the advantages of not having to worry about financials.RParadela wrote:To offer the other perspective of someone who grew up with money, coming from the family I do is a pretty big advantage over people who come from working class families. My parents paid for whatever LSAT prep I needed, I didn't have to worry about application fees, I have 0 debt from graduation atr UG, and I never had to work because of money issues. But most importantly, even though I have a small scholarship at a T13, I'll graduate law school completely debt free because of my parents. Those are huge advantages that I'm really lucky to have and anyone coming from a similar position as me would be incredibly stupid not to realize.

Had a dream last night that I had overlooked an acceptance email from the reach that WL'd me. Searched my inbox for such an email this morning, but nothing there. Safe to say this cycle has permeated my psyche at this point.

Absolutely, you'd be off your rocker to deny the advantages. Being able to accept an unpaid internship, not having to work through undergrad, being able to buy interview/internship clothes without worrying about it, etc.Dodocogon wrote:I'll give a +1; We aren't crazy wealthy or anything, but are well-off enough that I've lived a pretty much worry-free life (monetary wise), and that's about as much as you can ask for, imo. Re: TLS c/o 2020 Applicants
My family was alright, but I worked full time through undergrad and always paid for my expenses. I didn't miss much opportunities such as travel or going out because I always made money, but it was tough working 7-4 and then school 5-9 on the weekdays.
Now that things aren't so great with my family, things are crappy at work, and I've been trying to pay off all my cc debt before law school, I'm really feeling it hit me. First time in my life I'm rationing money and choosing not to go out or take advantage of certain entertainment options. I always lived by the work hard and play hard motto, but this sucks. The work hard and not play thing is terrible, and this is why I'll probably be paying minimum payments if I get into biglaw lol.
