+1 on including the summer months.JC2017 wrote:Definitely include the summer months, as you'll still need to sleep and eat. I think I know the answer just wondering what others are planning for.
The way I figured it: I made a high budget and low budget. So for example (my budget is for NYC), I made one budget that allows for $2,000 rent and having to pay utilities, with a large grocery budget and eating out/fun budget; then I made a second budget with $1700 rent with utilities included, a lower food/fun budget, etc. Of course certain expenses are the same no matter what (i.e. insurance, traveling home once a year, books.
This way, I have a budget range, and can visualize what I would have to sacrifice or pay for a certain lifestyle or a certain income level (read: loan amount).

I grocery shop every Sunday, takes about 20-30 minutes depending on the crowd. Probably spend two hours on Sunday cooking. I make breakfast everyday (usually a smoothie or yogurt or oatmeal) and that takes about 5 minutes every morning.R. Similar here. 30-40 minutes shopping once a week. 1 minute for breakfast (cereal and OJ). 3 minutes for lunch (ham or turkey and cheese sandwich, apple). Usually max 15-20 minutes a night making dinner, although I'm not fancy.bwaldorf wrote:I grocery shop every Sunday, takes about 20-30 minutes depending on the crowd. You eat the same thing everyday though? I like to meal prep but I try to make different meals.JC2017 wrote:Similar here. 30-40 minutes shopping once a week. 1 minute for breakfast (cereal and OJ). 3 minutes for lunch (ham or turkey and cheese sandwich, apple). Oh, I'll add that I didn't put time per day because I meal prep. If I run out of food before the next Sunday, I'll toss in a frozen pizza or Lean Cuisine or make a quick sandwich. I keep cheap stuff around for quick meals (pasta and sauce, sandwich materials, frozen pizza) if I'm starving for some reason or run out of the food I prepped.JC2017 wrote:Similar here. 30-40 minutes shopping once a week. 1 minute for breakfast (cereal and OJ). 3 minutes for lunch (ham or turkey and cheese sandwich, apple). For anyone going to NYC, might I suggest checking out Jersey City Heights (trust me, Jersey City is not bad!). From 2012-2014 I paid $600 for a room with 2-3 roommates in the apartment, and door to door to get into the middle of Manhattan is 25-30 minutes. The Path train runs 24 hours, and the NJ Transit buses are also quite convenient.theothercat wrote:+1 on including the summer months.JC2017 wrote:Definitely include the summer months, as you'll still need to sleep and eat. Haha yeah I'm a simple man with simple tastes, although I always have 2 cereal boxes open for variety! Re: TLS c/o 2020 Applicants
This might be weird but I've also trained my body to want less food. I have a really fast metabolism and used to be starving all. the. time. It was so easy to just give into a craving and grab a burger or takeout. It took some discipline but after sticking to strict portions for a few weeks, my body adapted and wasn't constantly starving. (FYI - I'm not starving myself. I'm talking about training myself to operate on a normal diet vs. wanting to eat literally all the time because I can).
Also, don't eat just because you're bored. These things sound simple but overeating and boredom eating made my grocery bill skyrocket.

More cycle data out:
Looks like an incremental dip from the last set of data (with the huge caveat that Feb scores aren't included yet).

I can't even step foot in one. During a road trip I took with my dad, we drove through the middle of nowhere for several hours. My options were McD's and Subway. I'd rather starve.

+1, time is my biggest hurdle to food budget right now, although in UG when all of my work could be done at home I was wayyy better about eating on the cheap.R. Jeeves wrote:to the reasonable food budgeters ITT: how many hours per week do you spend cooking and shopping?

black males are the hottest prize given that black applicants have dropped ~3%, and male applicants ~4%Sarastro wrote:Get to work nerds and tell me what this meansPozzo wrote:More cycle data out:

My first take is that the very top bands continue to be down, just a bit more so as the cycle moves along. 175-180 pretty consistently ~25% down this cycle. 170-4 has gone from 2% up to just 0.4% up since December (back out 170, and 171-4 is quite down). Meanwhile more of the later apps seem to be coming from 160-169 band. The 165-9 band was down 17% in Dec, but down 11.4% now. 160-4 has gone from down 4% to up 0.9% in that same time.Sarastro wrote:Get to work nerds and tell me what this meansPozzo wrote:More cycle data out:

Seems like 165+ is still a really good place to be, but that's small consolation in the face of the barrage of WL/dings coming out of the T14 these days...

According to government estimates, a 19-50 year old male should be spending the following monthly amounts for food:
thrifty $184, low cost $237, moderate $297, liberal $365
