Yeah. I think AAVE is an important part of culture (more for some AAs than others, but still). I think it's a way to help AAs bond/make them feel like there's something that's more exclusive to them. Whether or not it's good, who knows. But I think that, within the community, it carries its own value - especially when you get into vernacular that differs depending on location (aka NYC slang vs DC slang vs LA slang, etc).Leliana wrote:+180 to all of thisKopetz wrote:yeah, vernaculars have always existed and have necessarily been less complex than formalized registers of the same language (and have probably always been annoying to some degree to formally educated speakers)88234 wrote:

I can't see myself getting hyped from my friends yelling "YAS!" Lol. It's just played out to me. It's like (forgive the reference while I also have an avi of it) in HIMYM when Lilly said "son of a bitch" and pronounced it "beesh". It was somewhat funny the first time, but when it became a thing it was lame. That's how I see "yas" and "slay" lol.brinicolec wrote:Okay, y'all clearly just haven't had friends that hype you up/hyped up your friends enough because those two words are essential to the "GLO SIS" package.Assasindowntheavenue wrote:

Also, if this is the TLS rant hour, just wanted to say that I fucking hate "YASSS" and "Slay" and all those words that usually find their way back to Beyoncé for some reason. Maybe random but whatever lol.

agreed to all of this, and "good" in this case is highly subjective + contextualbrinicolec wrote:Yeah. I think AAVE is an important part of culture (more for some AAs than others, but still). Yeah, I agree! I also think some of the annoyance or confusion with terms like "yasss" or "slay" comes from the... loss of nuance? for lack of a better term - that happens when they get adopted into mainstream slang and the AAVE origin is lost.brinicolec wrote:Yeah. Also, I think it's different for me because I'm black so when things go mainstream I'm kinda like, "Okay, but who did it first (and better)?!?!?!?"

Anyone else sick to death of Koine? All these Alexandrian youths calling the sea "Thalassa" and refusing to use the dual form. It's unseemly!

I'll just tuck in real quick to say one can simultaneously believe that language can, will, and should change while also believing that you shouldn't apply or look for those changes retroactively.canafsa wrote:Oh god. I think I have. That narrator's voice sounds familiar. I don't think it was intentional (like I was looking for that channel specifically), I think I was just looking for any videos on schools lolMr_Chukes wrote:Anyone else on here watch these videos about schools or am I alone lol.

Don't get me started on all these kids today using plural pronouns to refer to a single person

That video had Tyler, the Creator interviewing Seth Rogen in the suggested videos, so safe to say I didn't stay on the Berk video long.Mr_Chukes wrote:Anyone else on here watch these videos about schools or am I alone lol.

There's a recent episode of Hidden Brain on the evolution of language I'd recommend: http://www.npr.org/2017/01/10/509035454 ... -literally
I think the bigger issue is that there's often little recognition/appreciation for the cultures from which language/slang is adopted (for example, I believe YAASS and slay were both originally popularized in drag queen culture). I don't think there's inherently an issue with the evolution of language through cultural exchange, but language appropriation has the same issues as other forms of cultural appropriation.

Also explains why they're all so chill, rarely talk about job prospects. Because they are still living in the pre-2008 world.brinicolec wrote: Lol, okay so I'm not trippin'. Good to know. When did YT become a thing? Trying to figure out why they'd wait to post those videos until 2013 lol
Youtube was around when the videos were made (albeit much smaller), but I am not sure why they didn't upload them until 2013.

That's very true. I mean, it's kind of like the classic *cringe* when someone uses slang improperly because they're not familiar with what it means but they want to use it anyway.NotAGolfer wrote:There's a recent episode of Hidden Brain on the evolution of language I'd recommend: http://www.npr.org/2017/01/10/509035454 ... -literally
