FIU decision made, letter mailed
My status changed to "Decision made, letter mailed." Anyone else feeling the stress? Lol. Doesn't sound like great news, but figured I'd ask around. I was already accepted to Nova and St. Thomas, but was hoping to get FIU, also. If all else fails, any recommendations based on the other two I got into? I recieved a $15k scholarship from St. Thomas, but everyone keeps telling me that Nova is where I should go if not FIU. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed about FIU's letter and let you all know when I find out.

I hate to break it to you, but Nova at sticker and St. Thomas with marginal scholarship are both terrible ideas. You should really retake and aim for better school/more scholarship or consider not going to law school at all.

Re: FIU decision made, letter mailed
I was actually talking to an attorney who teaches the LSAT the other day that was telling me that although FIU is ranked higher, Nova has a better reputation in South Florida. Nova has been around fora while and has a network of attorneys in the South Florida market. Many Nova alum look to hire other Nova grads. The name of the school on the degree does matter some. Sure Miami will probably open more doors but if you get the grades and attend networking events you'll get in somewhere and once you're in somewhere it's all what you do with it.
A friend of mine who has been practicing for years has also told me about the same. While the name matters some, in South Florida it's more about who you know. If you've ever tried to get a job in this town, you know that already. She says get out there and network. If you want Big Law, the name does matter some. Find out at Nova or St Thomas, what firms interview there and decide. If you don't care for Big Law then it's not that big a factor. Also keep in mind that there is always the transfer option. FIU and Miami will accept you if you have a 3.0 and a letter of recommendation or two. Best of luck.

After reading the above, and seeing "the transfer option is always open," i would patently ignore anything other than Florida specific advice.

At Miami Law's open house, they've said that they are always looking for students wanting to transferring in. They would accept more if more applied. If you do your part, the door is open. Not everyone can get a 170 LSAT. Some times you have to do it the unconventional way. Sounds like you're afraid of working hard for what you want.barkschool wrote:After reading the above, and seeing "the transfer option is always open," i would patently ignore anything other than Florida specific advice.

Cool non sequitor...you dont need near a 170 to get into Miami, though.LitigatingLiar wrote:At Miami Law's open house, they've said that they are always looking for students wanting to transferring in. The 170 was a reference to this site. The belief around here seems to be that if you don't get a 170, it's not worth going to law school. As long as you don't have a GPA that's too low a 155 gets you in to Miami. I do know of a 151 that got an underrepresented minority in. He was black. If you're hispanic around here, that doesn't count. That's the majority around here. All 4 law schools down here have a large hispanic population. FIU and St Thomas hispanics are the majority.lymenheimer wrote:Cool non sequitor...you dont need near a 170 to get into Miami, though.LitigatingLiar wrote:At Miami Law's open house, they've said that they are always looking for students wanting to transferring in. I've heard that St. Thomas is at risk of losing their accreditation. I'd avoid all these TTT(T) dumpster fires, but ST especially so.

Also heard this... Avoid those schools and ignore advice based on anecdotes and those who tell you transferring should factor into the equation of where to attend law school.

Sounds like you think that "working hard" places someone in the top 10% of their class.LitigatingLiar wrote:At Miami Law's open house, they've said that they are always looking for students wanting to transferring in. It's fairly well established that it is easier to raise your LSAT a few points (and drop the idiotic "170 or bust" crap; no one says that if you aren't shooting for goals that can be met outside of the T14) than to come in the top of your class, regardless of where you go to school.

Sorry to break it to you... but, when a status says "letter mailed" without a call and/or email, it means that you were either rejected or waitlisted.
Furthermore, if you were accepted, it would list something about the seat deposit on your status checker. Just something I have learned through experience (going on my second cycle).
