Waitlist Oasis c/o 2019

I figured it couldn't hurt to have a place for waitlisters to gather and interact for advice and encouragement. Feel free to post your waitlist woes and successes!

Well, as long as we're getting settled in, I might as well grab a drink.

Well, I'm expecting at least a few more. If not outright rejections.

Yeah I got waitlisted at my top choice and after not being able to find a thread to connect with others, I decided to make one. Anyone done a LOCI for any of their waitlist schools yet?

Excuse the lack of knowledge from this first time applicant, but if a school asks for an email expressing interest/desire to stay on the wait list, do you normally type up your LOCI in a document and attach it to the email, or just send an email expressing your interest?

Hopefully soon people will withdraw from schools they know they aren't going to attend

Both. Usually you first just email them saying yes but it's always good to then send something more substantial to say "I want to for real"

I will certainly not claim to be an expert but I'm doing mine as a document. I'm going to sign it and send it as a PDF attachment because I think it looks more professional. I already sent an email accepting the waitlist offer, but this is what I'm doing for my LOCI.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this because I've thought about it too.

I agree. I understand if someone is seriously debating which school to attend, but it irks me to no end to see people holding onto acceptances that they know they're not going to accept just to leverage for higher scholarships to the schools they do want to attend. I applied to three schools (not 20), knowing I was genuinely interested in all three. I got accepted to two and was waitlisted at my top choice. I already withdrew acceptance to one of the schools because I decided it really wasn't where I wanted to go and I knew how much being on a waitlist sucked so I didn't want to hold someone else back. I'm hoping the good karma will come back to me.

Depends on the context. If it's basically soliciting a LOCI, then yea just send a quick email with the LOCI as an attachment. Doesn't matter if it's physically signed or not. If it's a basic email asking you if you want to be on the waitlist, or just if you would like to remain on the waitlist for consideration, then you can just affirm your interest in being considered on the waitlist, and send your LOCI later.

So I'm new to all this. But I was notified of being waitlisted by a letter. They only said to notify a specific person if I wanted to decline to be on the waitlist. If I write a LOCI should I send it to that person? Or just the general admissions email?

I'll go ahead and check-in here. It's been over a week since my NDLS status checker changed to "decision made" and I have no deposit info nor acceptance email. Really thought I had a chance for acceptance, so I'll assume it's a WL until that letter finally arrives. Probably won't be the only WL for me...

*edit: got my WL letter today

I certainly am not an expert, but I've been told by many people to do exactly what the letter says. So, if it says to communicate with a specific person, communicate with that person. I've also been advised that it's typically a good idea to accept the waitlist offer immediately and follow up with a LOCI 3-4 weeks later. This is so you are not bombarding them with your enthusiasm. It's not an exact science I don't imagine, but a lot of people liken it to dating someone. You want to keep their interest but play it cool a bit.

Again, I'm not an expert just going off of advice that I've gotten from waitlisted applicants in years past that have gotten eventually admitted. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! It's just confusing because they specifically underline the not before stating who to contact, and later in the letter said to let us know if you have any questions. I might just call and ask tomorrow or Friday to be sure. I was also thinking about sending in my LOCI pretty soon because they mentioned in the letter it is possible to move off the WL after only a week or two and I am at their median LSAT and above GPA. Do you know if it's common (or even somewhat likely) to get scholarship money off the WL?

If the letter says it's possible to get off the WL after a week or two then I would definitely send the LOCI. For me, I know I can't get off of the WL until mid April at the earliest so I'm not sending it in for a while.

Call them for clarification and just be very respectful and polite. They can't ding you for that.

Working on a LOCI, is it ever appropriate to mention acceptances to other schools in a LOCI?? Maybe something about how you've been accepted to other similarly ranked schools (even higher ranked), but that you believe their school would be a better fit? Or is it best to just keep it solely about their institution?

Thanks

I'm not an expert, but I think it would be best to leave out any mention of other schools. Writing about other acceptances might come across the wrong way, and weaken your perceived commitment to the WL school. I would only mention other acceptance offers after you've been accepted to the WL school in order to discuss scholarship matching/adjustments.
I have heard of people using acceptances to higher-ranked schools as leverage to get off of WLs. One person I talked to said that they basically said I got into X and Y (which were higher-ranked schools), and I am willing to withdraw these acceptances immediately and pay my seat deposit within 24 hours. I agree it could be a risky move, but it seemed to work for this person.
