How are your employment prospects looking, and how are the employment prospects of your friends and classmates looking? In what city/region/area are most people looking for jobs? Are you originally from VA, and if so, how has that affected your employment prospects?imnottelling wrote:Congrats on those who have already been admitted to W&L Law! I am a third-year student at W&L Law, and should you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them. I hope everyone will consider visiting the campus.
My employment prospects are good. I have a federal clerkship lined up and I have accepted an offer at a V5 firm in NYC. I will be completely honest, I would not have had these prospects had it not been for the ability for me to get to know my professors (one of them helped me land the clerkship) and the Office of Career Strategy. I underbid at OCI and the Office of Career Strategy helped get my resume into the hands of some other firms. I am not from Virginia and that did not impact my prospects (I also applied in DC without issue). For some of my friends, having ties to the area where one wants to practice has helped (example: a classmate of mine is from Alabama and has post-graduation employment at a firm there). Employment prospects for the class of 2015 was quite good. I believe that they are looking at around 80% nine-months out (and they are a huge class - over 170 students, which, compared to my class of less than 100, is huge). As for my class, there are a number of us with jobs from our summer associate positions. There are others who do not yet have employment. Really, I haven't been paying too much attention to give you exact numbers for my class, but I would venture around 50% have jobs lined up already. I have friends with jobs or clerkships lined up (and we are sending a fair number of people to fed. clerkships this year) and friends who are still looking. The nice thing is that Career Strategy knows the names of those people who are still looking and are trying to help them out. I have classmates who are targeting New York, the mid-Atlantic (DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, West Virginia), Tennessee, Florida, Texas, and California, to give some examples. Those targeting the further away states tend to have ties in those areas. California seems to be a difficult state to break into, but we do have alumni out there and it is not impossible. Hope that helps and feel free to ask more questions.redfred22 wrote:How are your employment prospects looking, and how are the employment prospects of your friends and classmates looking?
