I think the conventional wisdom is to keep them at a page or less.

But what I hope you're asking is whether or not you can upload a video application a la Legally Blonde. In which case I say God speed.

No... hypothetically, let's say I'm uploading a photography portfolio (I'm not). Uploads keep failing, and I'm assuming its due to size (after I remembered pdfs aren't supported.

I believe they recently updated it so that pdfs are now supported.

I'm going to make a video of me opening my Harvard Rejection letter and as soon as I open it the camera pans to the line of text on the letter that says 'rejected' and that's when Sarah McLachlan's "In the arms of an angel" starts playing.

Is it ever not a good idea to apply to Duke through their accelerated decision program? I'm not very familiar with the admissions process in general because I'd been studying for the LSAT, but I got an email from them telling me to apply. My stats are 3.89. GPA and 164 LSAT, though I'm retaking this weekend but not expecting to do much better. In terms of my goals, I want to practice law in the south, so Duke sounds appealing.

3MB, in case anyone was wondering.

And here I was trying to get a 16MB file up.

I wouldn't apply through that program.
It's binding and that means you're looking at getting $0 in scholarships.
300K is a lot of debt.

I didn't realize it would disqualify me from getting scholarship $.

With regards to Why X letters, how much emphasis do schools put on them. Considering I'm on the outside looking in, should I write one? The problem is that I just don't know anything specific about schools like Duke that I could write on. Any advice on this?

It doesn't disqualify you, it just removes any incentive for them to give you one. Once you're accepted through a binding program, you either go to that school or you don't go that year. At that point, why would they give you a scholarship when you're on the line for all that tuition anyway? Some people who apply ED get scholarships, but they're not nearly as common.

As for Why X essays, it really depends on the school. Some schools, UVA and Penn come to mind, really want them. I'd write one if I were you. Go online, do some research, figure out how the offerings and job placement at Duke align with your interests and goals, then write a page about it. It's really pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Good luck.
