Just thought I would throw in here as a current 1L that Philly as a city has grown on me a lot. Was honestly not looking forward to it when I got kind of forced towards Penn due to financial reasons, but very happy now that I am here.

I know I am like 4 pages past this discussion in this thread.

I know almost nothing about philly and, even though I think Penn will reject me, do you mind shedding some light on what has helped it to grow on you?
It's a great city, and pretty affordable too. It's really under rated.

I will first put the disclaimer that I am living in Centre City (basically downtownish) and do not really do anything in University City other than to walk to and from the law school.

At first one thing that really struck me about the city was the infrastructure was a bit decayed, but I have mostly gotten over that. Overall the city has a lot more culture and character than a lot of places I have been to, is shockingly affordable, and in general feels a lot younger than I originally expected.

There are a lot of things that feel very distinctly Philly like the BYOs that add uniqueness.

It is also a very bike friendly city if that is important to you, I really do not think there is any reason to need a car.

Despite what I am saying, it is not just that it has a fair amount of positives, but that it has a lot fewer negatives than what I expected. Philly does not conjure a good image to people in BC, not only from my anecdote but from anyone I told where I was attending.

Hi everyone, lurker turned poster here. Did you guys do the teamwork supplement essay? I'm having a lot of trouble with mine and want to scrap it but I'm worried that not writing it will reflect badly on my interest in Penn.

I wrote one! Not quite sure that you have to do all 4 optional essay since they are optional. But feel free to PM me.

Edit: I did all of them...

I did their equivalent of a Why Penn and then another optional essay. I'm pretty sure you can do a max 2 so why not just pick another?
I think I submitted Why Penn and a DS.
I think I'll keep working on it and submit a DS. Thanks for the feedback!

Word is that the core value essay is highly favored. Just in case you didn't know!

I didn't write a why Penn and my GPA is <25th so I'm definitely getting dinged. I just couldn't generate the hype to write it.
Yep, it seems the why Penn is pretty important to them, and they like their high GPAs. I don't consider Penn to be a realistic choice, but I will be pleasantly surprised if I am wrong. Like I was with the Chicago interview. Guess anything can happen.
Yeah I've heard a Why Penn is basically required, but that could be unsubstantiated. I think I'm right on the border, so fully expecting a waitlist. That said, Penn's employment prospects are awesome, and the city of Philly has a lot to offer in the way of history.
Funny story, I brought this up to an adcomm once, and they just kind of laughed and said "like we don't mind them, but we think its funny that we have this reputation as needing a why Penn"
