Checking in! Not sure how long I can feasibly stay on the list, since I can't exactly move across the country a day before classes... but will hang on for now. I never did write a Why Berk or customize my app, so I'm wondering if now is the time. I know the e-mail says the wait list is ranked, but it made it sounds as though the ranking is not yet complete.

They have already ranked the waitlist. They rank it as they review.wealtheow wrote:Checking in! eta: hmrrmrmm. e-mail says "The waiting list will be ranked in late March and we will email your quartile placement on the list once it becomes available. There is nothing you can do to affect your ranking on the list. We do not provide precise rank positions because individual rankings change often as other wait-listed applicants withdraw to pursue other options. Approximately 300 people ultimately will comprise the waiting list."
well whatever. i need to update my address with all my schools anyway.

Checking in. Wonder how far down the list they have gone historically. I got a feeling if I end up in the bottom quartile that chances are very slim.

Last year's thread has some good info:

looks like it varies a lot from year to year.

40 people admitted off the list was the most ever according to what I read in your post. So, my guess is the lower quartiles have almost no chance. However, it is impossible to speculate how many people will remove themselves from the list.wealtheow wrote:Last year's thread has some good info:

Checking in. Got my WL email 2 minutes before running into a workout class. Let's just say I was throwing some serious punches in that class. Glad to be joining such a seemingly great group! (Long time lurker)

Tagging in.
ETA - 300 on the waitlist sounds small compared to some places. I'll take it as a moral victory. Unless I'm in the top quartile, in which case I'll take it as an actual victory

I've heard conflicting information about this and I'm wondering if anyone knows... is there a limit to how many waitlists we can stay on after submitting a seat deposit at a school?

Looks like people found out their quartile fairly early last year (end of March) - and there was quite a bit of movement beginning in June. So that's heartening.

Re: waitlisted at UC Berkeley/Boalt c/o 2017
Reminder:
Good luck to everyone here.Waitlist
TLS: What is the size of Boalt’s waitlist?
Dean Tom: “Usually the waitlist is anywhere from 200-300 applicants who are ranked by the admissions committee.”
TLS: Roughly how deep into the waitlist does Boalt go?
Dean Tom: “This year, not very deep. I think the deepest we’ve ever gone was a number of years back, we took about 40 people.”
TLS: Wow, not many.
Dean Tom: “No. This year it was 12. But, it varies from year to year, and this year, because I knew how good the people were on the waiting list, I intentionally admitted fewer people up front, thinking that I could go deeper into the waiting list. But, I wasn’t able to, because the yield rate was very high. A large percentage of accepted applicants decided to attend. ”
TLS: Good for Boalt.
Dean Tom: “Yeah, well, so much for my big idea.”
TLS: If one ends up on the waitlist, is there anything that you can do to increase the likelihood of admission?
Dean Tom: “No. There’s nothing you can do to improve your chances. And we tell people that when we inform them that they are on the waiting list. The waiting list is ranked by the faculty at the time the decision is made to waitlist them, because we believe the information is fresh in their mind and they’re best able to assign a waitlist ranking at that time.”
TLS: So saying that you’re still interested doesn’t matter?
Dean Tom: “Well, that helps us, but it’s not going to improve your chances or position.”

Yeah, I've read that interview where they said 250-300. I would be really curious to know how many people they wait list in the current cycle. It just seems like law school applications are really different from a couple years ago.

This seems sensible to me.yeslekkkk wrote:Yeah, I've read that interview where they said 250-300. I would be really curious to know how many people they wait list in the current cycle. It just seems like law school applications are really different from a couple years ago.
At the same time, I wonder if I should bother with a LOCI based on the above...

I was wait listed in FR1, and I was debating on whether to send a LOCI or not, but they specifically state NOT to send one. You probably should follow their directions. I'm going to stop by the law school when I'm in the bay area in a couple weeks and say hello and ask. But it seems pretty risky to not follow their directions. What do others think?cron1834 wrote:This seems sensible to me.yeslekkkk wrote:Yeah, I've read that interview where they said 250-300. Don't submit a LOCI, unless you want to axe your chances. No means no.
Seems like everyone who sent LOCI during FRs ended up getting denied.

Somehow missed this blurb the first time I read the e-mail (probably too upset for reading comp): Submission of additional materials or a letter of continued interest is not encouraged as these will have neither a bearing on your wait list placement nor on your admission.
So, definitely no LOCI. One less thing to do!

Waitlisted!
I'm actually honored to even be on the WL (and not in the ding bar), which is definite proof that Berkeley does take into account the full application instead of just looking at some basic scores.
Good luck to everyone!

Posted in the other thread but figured it'd be more appropriate here: at one 75th, above the other, Why X, 4th quartile

2nd quartile. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
