U of New Mexico c/o 2016 (2012-2013 cycle)
Anyone applying to UNM? I'm kind of anxious, waiting to hear back. I'm OOS, but would love to a) be warm and b) study Indian law at one of the strongest NA law schools! (I'm URM/NA)

I applied and was accepted about a month ago. I like the school but I have heard that New Mexico can be very insular when it comes time for employment (essentially if you are not from NM originally or have strong ties you will be at a distinct disadvantage when it comes time to hire).
I would actually like to hear more about that if anyone currently attending NM has any experience.

I did not attend UNM law, but did do an MA there, and I can tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt that New Mexico is very, very insular. Also, Albuquerque is cold as balls in the winter time, so for the poster who was interested in being warm, go ahead and nix that for December, January, and February.Pip42 wrote:I applied and was accepted about a month ago. I go there. It's not that bad. The New Mexico legal community is very small, in the sense that there is a lot of networking. But, that depends on you, and your experiences when you get here. If you get out and network, you will be fine. If you want to rest on your laurels and depend on Career services to do all the work for you, then you will feel that it is very insular.
Additionally, it is not that cold - and I hate the cold.
Good luck!

Anyone else hear from UNM?
My app was in towards end of November. Application Complete date is 12/14/2012.
Just wondering how many people have heard.
3.35/155 non-urm NM resident. Was wait listed last year, but no go on admission!

I haven't heard back either, they are really taking their time. But I'm leaning toward University of Arizona now, so unless UNM offers me a full ride, I will prob be going to U of A.

I'm from New Mexico, went to UNM for undergrad and I'm coming back after I graduate from an out of state law school. As anyone who has gotten a job in the state without going to UNM law can tell you, roughly 80% of Albuquerque's attorneys went to UNM. I was an extern for the Supreme Court of New Mexico this summer and of the 10 permanent clerks 8 went to UNM, not to mention 3 of the 5 justices went there. There isn't a single door in the state UNM law can't open for you if you do well. That's the catch, though, I know a few people at top 25 schools who below median slide into jobs you need to be in the top handful at UNM to get.
Also, as someone who has gone through New Mexican hiring, it is by far the most insular market I interviewed in. Every single New Mexico interview asked me where I went to high school and where my parents live and what they do for a living, some even asking about my grandparents.
There are a couple good threads on point, including this one http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 1&t=161142

Mine said I was in review as well. Are they really as hard on out of staters in terms of admissions as what people say they are? If so, as a quasi-splitter, I think I'm boned.

Re: U of New Mexico c/o 2016 (2012-2013 cycle)
Yeah they are tough on out of staters from what I've read. They have about 80 percent in-state and give preference to people from New Mexico. For an in-state student my numbers are fine, but for an out of state student I don't think I have a prayer. Good luck! I hope that we know soon so we don't have to keep stressing over it.fdcardoza wrote:Mine said I was in review as well. To the best of my knowledge, they let you know by email if you are accepted/rejected. If you are accepted then they mail you your official acceptance and award package etc in the mail. If you are rejected you just receive the email.fdcardoza wrote:Did you get notified via email or through the mail?jbradley04 wrote:I just found out I was accepted and I will be happily going UNMSOL.

Thanks.
I was notified by email. I believe either way you are notified by email.
Now I need to figure out how much debt I will acquire!
Wish everyone else good luck and hopefully will get to see you in the fall.

More than three months later, I still have not heard if I've even been accepted. Meanwhile, deadlines for all the other schools I've been accepted to are coming up this weekend. Gotta say, I'd like my application fee back.

This is completely ridiculous. I'm not going to go to law school in the fall, but I really wanted to know whether I got in or not. UNM was the first place I applied for and I already heard from everyone else months ago.elcee1987 wrote:More than three months later, I still have not heard if I've even been accepted. Having gone to grad school at UNM, let me warn you about something. New Mexico in general is the "Land of Mañana." It is a little bastion of traditional Latin American-style inefficiency right here in the good old USA. I have a ton of horror stories about this type of thing. The law school could be completely different, but I would be surprised if that were the case.Jacquelyn11 wrote:This is completely ridiculous.
