I should probably put a link to my LSN page in my profile but I'm too lazy.
I'm 163 with a 3.57 LSAC GPA.

Any experience with the clinics? Are people usually able to get into the clinic they want or is it super-selective?
Got an opinion on housing? Trying to decide between The Edge v. ULofts
Anybody in your class have a job lined up yet? Are people usually stuck forever in West Texas?
Can you comment on the social life?

I'm in one of the criminal defense clinics, and I think only a few people that applied weren't selected. Selectivity really depends on the clinic and how many apply in a given year. There are two criminal defense clinics, each with 12 people, so there were plenty of spots. I don't think the tax, mediation, or family law clinics are too competitive. I would think the civil clinic would be the most competitive, but even then I think the majority of the people that applied got in. Of course, this all depends on how many people apply, as there are limited seats available for each clinic and clinic directors select the most qualified.lnh819 wrote:Any experience with the clinics? The Edge. I responded to your other post in last year's thread. The Edge is reserved for graduate students, so you won't be dealing with loud undergrads.Got an opinion on housing? Trying to decide between The Edge v. ULofts
Yeah. In my circle of friends, some got offers from the firms they summered at (Jackson Walker, Haynes Boone, and Kelly Hart are the ones I remember). Most people end up in smaller firms though, if they go the civil law route. For example, i just talked to a guy the other day that is graduating in December, and he is going to a smaller firm in San Angelo. I want to be a prosecutor, so my job search is a little different than most because DA offices cant hire you full time until you pass the bar.Anybody in your class have a job lined up yet? I haven't looked in awhile but there should be information on our website that shows the regional breakdown of where our grads typically go, and that will show we are definitely not restricted to only west texas. I think Dallas, Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston are fairly high on the list, if I remember correctly.
Honestly, the mood around the school is optimistic. Naive? Yeah, I'm sure to an extent. But in a weird way I think our location is somewhat helpful. People have opportunities for jobs in the bigger cities, like dallas and san antonio, and if all fails for some reason they have the backup of West Texas, which is a huge region with jobs. Although not ideal for most, it is still a legal job, which a lot of grads at significantly higher ranked schools are having trouble getting. And you won't be stuck in a certain region forever. It really is all about getting that first job. Once that happens, you can gain experience and then pretty much move where you want.
Social life is good. Lubbock provides a small town feel with big city amenities. There are good bars, concerts, sports, etc. But what is really cool is how the law students sort of form their own community and social scene. I can't speak for other schools, but at Tech there isn't really any backstabbing, and people for the most part get along. This makes for a better social scene in my opinion because people will go out to party in big groups and what not. Or if for example, i see a group of classmates out, i wouldnt get any weird looks if i joined along. Another example is a party the upperclassman throw each year for the 1Ls called Disorientation. It is usually the weekend after orientation and is a good time. There are a coulple of parties like this each semester, along with the joint MBA/MD/JD halloween party and law school prom. Regardless of where you end up going to school, your social life won't be ideal because your life will be dominated by coursework. However, there will be plenty of opportunities to unwind at tech. Can you comment on the social life?

Re: Texas Tech C/O 2016 Applicants
Thanks for the helpful post!
I think Law School Prom and the Halloween party sound fantastic! I love an excuse to dress up!
I'd really enjoy the Family Law clinic - that's the area I'm leaning towards - so it's nice to hear that I'd have a chance of getting in.
I'm planning to submit an application to The Edge and the ULofts this week. They both fill up fast and I want my name on the list. I can always back out of one once I've had the chance to tour them - although that may not be until April. It's hard when you live nine hours away! Your point about noisy undergrads is good advice although I tend to be good at tuning out extra noise.
I'd love to live in San Antonio or Houston after graduation - not so much Dallas - so it's nice to hear Tech has a state-wide reputation. I could also see myself staying in Lubbock (or at least West Texas) but that's easy to say when I haven't lived there yet!

Re: Texas Tech C/O 2016 Applicants
I'm a 2L here at Tech so feel free to pm me any questions you might have. I've liked it a lot here and I am really happy with my decision to attend Tech. I am planning on going the larger firm route and have two jobs lined up for this summer in Dallas, so I've been through the whole OCI thing if you want to ask any questions about job prospects and things of that nature. I haven't encountered one student that has been upset that they attended Tech because of the school. Most people really like the school a lot. The only people that tend to not really enjoy Tech are people that don't end up liking Lubbock or don't like being so far away from the major cities in Texas.

So I just realized I am at Tech's exact 25th percentile. I really don't know how to take this. Tech is my dream school. Any Advice?

Any accepted students get the email inviting them to the Facebook group? The link isn't working for me - claims that page doesn't exist. Has anybody else gotten it to work or contacted somebody about it?
Think if we say his name three times - Dean Perez will appear here? He sent the email.
