Re: UCLA c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
This entire argument is fallacious regardless. You don't know the individual accomplishments of these graduates. It's completely possible that all of the top of the class at USC each came in with 10 years of professional work experience and UCLA's all wanted to go into public interest. You cannot look at the statistics with complete certainty without knowing more about the graduates themselves. That is why the anecdotal information is helpful but they should supplement each other, not taken as the entire picture by themselves.

Good luck with that!BigZuck wrote:
Look, I could care less if they preferred that I went to UCLA, if going to USC means I have a higher percentage chance of actually getting hired then I'm going to go to USC, all other things being equal.

Re: UCLA c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
So....I was admitted a while ago but was never awarded any type of financial aids. I inquired about merit-based scholarships. In the meantime I submitted a Need Access application (I submitted it to every school). Two days later I was given a need-based grant. Small amount, but I was utterly surprised. I am a resident alien and I do have some savings, so I didn't think I would be qualified for need-based aids at all. In fact, I told them I wasn't applying for a need-based aid. But the email does specifically say, several times, that it is a need-based grant.
I'm still waiting to see if any merit-based scholarships would be coming my way.

I just got a need-based grant with no merit component. They were like "let us know if this is competitive with other offers" and I felt like an ass writing back, "Um, not quite."wisteria wrote:So....I was admitted a while ago but was never awarded any type of financial aids. Yeah, same email. So this is all we are going to get? I thought a merit-based grant would be given in a separate email.shntn wrote:I just got a need-based grant with no merit component. Re: UCLA c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Most folks seem to have gotten merit offers either in the initial phone call or soon after. I was admitted back in October and figured they'd get to me when they could, but I finally reached out and straight up asked about it. We'll see.wisteria wrote:Yeah, same email. ETA: well that was easy. Offered $105k in addition to the need-based grant from this morning. UCLA now of MAJOR interest.

I personally like UCLA, but they offered me 45k for merit and just got 3k for need base, but the cross town school stepped up with 120k. They keep telling me that " let us know about any competitve offers" ....i am going to visit both schools in 3weeks i will probably discuss it with them at that time, thoughts?

Re: UCLA c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Well in my limited experience, they made an offer, I mentioned other offers, and they then proceeded to blow those two out of the water. This all happened in the course of maybe three hours.uconjak wrote:I personally like UCLA, but they offered me 45k for merit and just got 3k for need base, but the cross town school stepped up with 120k. So yeah, just bring it up with them.

Y'all should probably just withdraw from UCLA. USC has much better employment stats anyways...

As for UCLA matching offers- I have tried a couple times with offers from peers that are vastly superior and they wouldn't budge, despite repeatedly saying "let us know if this is competitive." I haven't tried with my USC offer yet and maybe I won't bother, we will see.
And as for the need based grant- I would be very leery of that. If they offer you a nominal one then no biggie but if it is substantial (like 10K) and you are counting on that as part of your package there is no reason for them to not say "whoops, we can't offer you that!" in your second or third year because of budgetary concerns, etc. All the UC schools are hurting and tuition keeps jumping up substantially every year and I would be very careful about counting on any aid from them that isn't in the typical merit aid, you can't lose it unless you suck at law school, form.

Re: UCLA c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Well UCLA's class size is much larger than USC's right? So theoretically every hiring partner could favor UCLA and hire more UCLA grads than USC grads. But as long as they higher both, and the difference the amount the higher from each, USC's stats are going to be better. That would mean USC would give you a better "chance" of being hired, even if more UCLA kids get hired.
WL'd at UCLA & 120k at USC, so there's probably some bitterness on my part.

So it seems from this thread there isn't too much of a pattern of when they give out merit aid? Accepted by phone today but wasn't told about it.

Is anyone else sitting complete early December?
Arggggg.
How have I not heard back?
Though I do not pity myself. I'm sure I did something to deserve this.
