I was working on a school budget at work, but I don't have the estimated breakdown for COA with me.

Could someone post it? I believe it was in the fin aid letter and was around 80,000 flat

Estimated COA is ~$79,000 give or take a couple hundred. I don't remember the exact number.

Every time I see this, I get really sad.

Yeah, quite a large number.... Assume at least a 3% increase every year, or ~82,000 year 2, and ~84,500 year 3. Of course a 2L SA helps mitigate some of the loans, and as I said a few pages back, if you're semi-frugal, you certainly won't be using the entire loan budget either. Also, if your parents have health insurance (and you're still eligible to be covered by it), then that can save you an additional 2k a year.

I think so. I read somewhere, maybe, that all of the move-ins are on the same date because we start so early. I could be wrong though.

I actually get the impression that they don't want everyone moving in at the same time, which is why they ask us to rank the top three and then assign dates out from there.

I'm assuming the smart thing to do is borrow the projected cost of attendance the first year, and then take out less next year if you don't end up spending it all?

That's what I'm going to do.

Under the 2012-2013 awards section, mine says:
- Grant: 25k
- Perkins Loan: 2.5k
- Stafford Loan: 20.5k

Budget Total: 79,950

So on the loan request form I write down: 20,500 for Stafford and then 31,950 for Grad PLUS (and assume they'll add the 2500 Perkins to cover the other 2500)?

ETA: I guess it's technically 79,350 now since we deposited 600 lol

nope, if you read a couple pages back, other people didn't. It already cleared as a charge on my credit card, so that's confirmation to me.

That's what I'm going to do.

Well it took them 5 months to answer my app and only 4 days to get me my award offer! They came within 10k of NYU so I think I am going to be enrolling. Taking a day or two to think about it but I think I'll be in Morningside Heights next year!

See I thought I'd like NYU more until I was actually at Columbia... Don't get me wrong, NYU was amazing. But the students seemed almost completely interchangeable and I liked the housing at CU 100x more. Also I lack self control so the village, as much as I love it, is probably not the best place for me to go to school....

I didn't see the housing at either school, as I figured that's a bad reason to choose a law school anyway

Yep . I liked Columbia, but didn't leave with any excitement in the stomach... I thought that was normal because it's grad school. Then I visited NYU and loved it. I also got 3 times more money there, so that helped solidify my decision.

What is it you hated so much about NYU housing? PM if you want... People might get mad we're discussing another school in Columbia's thread

I had the same exact question, but I *believe* so.

Unrelated, but one of my friends at NYU said that you only really spend money on books the first semester (since they have high resale value), which means we could potentially be shaving 1.5k off 2L and 3L years too (that's how much CLS budgets in their COA estimates).
