So down, even though I am still hurting from his destruction of my beloved Lakers.

So, yeah. Reviving this idea.

I know how stupid it is--monumentally stupid, in fact, considering the huge amount of debt I'm about to be taking on...

But my parents are coming to NY with me (it's been a rough year and they're in need of some R&R) and this will probably be the only chance I ever have to see a game at MSG with my dad, so... screw it. Baseline risers section 7, row 6, here we go. It's just money, right?

So I won't be able to visit during the ASDs but am coming for a visit with my SO. Neither of us has ever been to NYC. We'll be spending a weekend there.

I have no idea what to do in a city with everything - not sure where to start looking. Basically, she likes her trips to be well-planned and filled with stuff to do. I'd really like to convince her that she wants to move to NYC. Anyone have suggestions as to how to go about accomplishing this? Should I be looking at guided tours? Is it fairly easy to do a self-guided tour of the city's highlights? Etc. Thanks for replies.

If you want to hit up a bunch of top tourist spots, I'd recommend getting the New York CityPass.

The CityPass gets you in at 6 places. Additionally, the website shows you where each of the places are, ways to get there (subway, bus, CitySights bus, etc), and hours information. They're all located around Manhattan, and walking between the attractions will take you through Times Square area and all the shops and restaurants.

Disclaimer: I've never been to NYC either, but this is what I've been planning for my extra days there.

I'm from New York, so I've never done a guided tour or anything along those lines, but I don't think it would be necessary. What is she interested in? Museums, shopping, food, live music, etc.? Seeing landmarks?

Admitted students requesting a travel subsidy (to attend an admitted students' day) need to do three things.

First, you will need to send an email to law.finaid@nyu.edu indicating that you are in need of a travel subsidy.

The email you send to law.finaid@nyu.edu should contain the following
information:

1) Subject line - travel subsidy;

2) Which admitted students day you plan to attend;

3) Whether you will be traveling to and receiving a travel subsidy from any other school.

Second, you will need to complete our institutional financial aid application. You can access the financial aid application via our Admitted Students Web site. This will be available beginning in mid-February.

Finally, please notify us once you have completed the Institutional Aid application, so that we can finish processing your travel subsidy request.

Please feel free to contact me again should you have further questions. We look forward to the possibility of meeting you at one of our Admitted Students Day programs or at another time this spring.

I think they pretty much turned down everyone who requested one, but, in their defense, you really can't say that they don't go the extra mile to make the process as convoluted and byzantine as humanly possible

Via phone call. He indicated that they would continue to invite people up through mid-late March.

I believe that if you only want to be considered for merit aid you can ask to fill out NYU's Institutional Application for Financial Aid, which does not include parental info. I think it's Form C in their website (don't hold me to this). Anyway I did that because I figured I might as well not waste time/money on the Need Access form. (That said NYU if you're out there I would still love some $$$!). I'd call their financial aid people if you'd prefer to do this option.

Hey man, I'd rather do what you did instead of filling out the tedious NeedAccess. I can't find any Form C on the website, can you tell me where you found it?

You need to fill out the FAFSA too, but without parent information.

I was actually freaking out about asking my parents (I put it off until two days ago and I know that some people had started as early as the first week of Jan.) Turns out my mom has been doing this song and dance for years (I am one of four brothers who has gone through college) so she's pretty much a pro at compiling this info on the fly (plus she's a former accountant). Unnecessary stress .
