On campus, without a doubt. I've never lived in the city, and I'm coming from the west coast, so dealing with the NYC housing search is one headache I'd like to avoid 1L year.callmepuck wrote:Quick question. Are most people on here thinking about staying on or of campus.

Off, but because I am already in the city.callmepuck wrote:Quick question. Are most people on here thinking about staying on or of campus.
I just got my blue envelope with the post-it! I can't wait for the pizza box to come my way.

Definitely off. I think it will help me maintain a (very) tiny bit of balance in my life. As much as I anticipate loving my classmates, I just don't want to live in a law school bubble.callmepuck wrote:Quick question. Are most people on here thinking about staying on or of campus.
Also, I hate dorms. I lived off campus for my last three years of undergrad, and have no desire to go back to dorm life.

Isn't it apartment style, though? Or is it "apartment-style" but really dorm style. The housing information that I've seen has been...ambiguous.thatkid wrote:Definitely off. I think the NYU undergrad dorms were also "apartment-style" .. but they are still dorms. You can find an apt in NYC for cheaper.. and I definitely couldn't go back to living in a dorm after having the freedom of my own apartment. But also I think if I wasn't familiar with the city, the dorms would be a great option for 1L. They are in an awesome location.the_phoenix612 wrote:Isn't it apartment style, though? I don't know, actually. It looks like it's at least mostly apartment style, if not entirely. If I were doing student housing, it would definitely be apartment style, because I would only consider it if I got family housing (I've lived with my SO for three years, and really want to keep him around).the_phoenix612 wrote:Isn't it apartment style, though? I suppose that things like not being able to bring my own furniture, and the awful experience of moving in and out on the same day as everyone else living there, and never actually feeling "at home" are what make off campus housing more attractive to me. There are definitely a lot of advantages to on campus housing, it just isn't for me.

Yes it's apartment style. You can look at all the floor plans for the D'ag and mercer units on their webpage. I posted some housing info a while back but they come furnished with tables, a bed, desk, fridge, etc.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I was just wondering if anyone could share insights on if they thought about the negatives of say a commute from jersey city, new jersey.

I mean the PATH is slightly cheaper than the subway and runs 24 hours, so transportation won't be a problem. I imagine the commute would be half an hour or less. The downside is that you have to live in new jersey.callmepuck wrote:Thank you everyone for your replies. Also, from a different thread:crooked wrote:There was a conversation about this issue earlier ITT, starting on page one.callmepuck wrote:Thank you everyone for your replies. kaiser wrote:I live in Jersey City and it works perfectly for me. But I think there is certainly value in being super close to campus for 1L year. I just couldn't stomach the idea of feeling like an undergrad and living in a dorm past that first year. I spoke to the benefits of living off-campus right by the water in Jersey in the other thread, but I'm happy to let you know about them once again. Renting a room by the PATH station in Jersey City will only cost you about half of what NYU dorms cost. The tradeoff is that the commute takes about 35 minutes (which includes the train and short walk). To me, it was a worthwhile tradeoff, but I could see a 1L wanting to be closer to campus and in the loop of everything during that first year. I just like to be able to get away from the craziness of the city, have a relatively big apartment for cheap, etc.
It was also discussed in the NYU 2L thread

this is the only video I've managed to find of either of the places:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD5jz_8VfRI
it's not exactly citizen kane, but it probably gives you a better idea of size & dimensions than looking at the 2D floor plans (not sure which layout it is, though). for what it's worth, it looks like you could probably macgyver a common area with a wall-mounted flatscreen and a loveseat, or something, provided that everybody involved can lie perfectly flat on their side for hours at a time and doesn't mind a level of immediate physical intimacy more usually associated with doomsday cults.

Checking in. I had never really considered NYU and thus know very little about it... Lots of research to do... Hard decisions to make (can't imagine life without a car)... Pretty crazy couple of weeks.
Congrats everyone!

Definitely living in campus housing if I go here (which is probable). A mercer 2BR seems like my best bet. Does anyone know how housing choices work? I know you can't apply until after you put down your first deposit.

You get to rank order your 4 top choices. Anyone who submits before the deadline gets equal consideration. Although the studios are by far the most popular so those are hardest to get.

On campus doesn't look all too bad. I'm from the southwest so the square footage hurts my heart but I think my delicate sensibilities could adjust to east coast living. I think I'll post this in the 1L/2L thread but how comparable are off campus options to the campus floor plans, amenities etc? I would imagine the amenities might be a little more all-inclusive on campus? TYIA if anyone can answer this here.

Hey everyone.
I got my acceptance on Friday so I thought I'd check in to the In at NYU thread. NYU is definitely up there as one of my top choices, but I'm waiting to hear back from a few more schools before I make up my mind.
Thanks for the youtube videos of NYU housing! For those of you that are planning on living off campus (especially those who are familiar with New York), what neighborhoods would you suggest looking at for apartments? Would living in Brooklyn or another neighborhood outside of Manhattan be too long of a commute to be worth the rent saving?

In D'ag and Mercer you will have tv, Internet, and utilities included in the price of the room. They also come furnished.Mal Reynolds wrote:On campus doesn't look all too bad. Obviously if you live off campus this won't be the case. You'd have to look at listings on various nyc apartment finder sites. I think nakedapartments is one of the better ones.

Cool thanks for the info. I might just check out apartments to get a sense of what else is around the area. At first glance the rates for on campus look steep but with all of this included it seems like a good deal, especially if it can help mitigate the number of things you have to worry about as a 1L.Hawkeye Pierce wrote:In D'ag and Mercer you will have tv, Internet, and utilities included in the price of the room. Since NYU is on the West Side, Brooklyn could take some time and the neighborhoods worth living in in Brooklyn aren't that much cheaper than Manhattan or are populated with the worst hipster stereotypes imaginable. Queens and the Bronx are also pretty far away. Jersey seems reasonable based on what people have said.Genki wrote:Hey everyone.

Park slopes and prospect heights are good neighborhoods to look into in Brooklyn. Some people really rave about astoria in queens, but the subway lines aren't as reliable as the ones in Brooklyn. You can also look into northern jersey options like jersey city and commute via path. Any of those would likely give you a commute time around half an hour. I think it's triptopnyc that lets you type in an address and find out how long it takes to commute to the rest of the city via subway.Genki wrote:Hey everyone.
