I would choose UIUC. If you're doing business law then you probably want to get into biglaws, and they tend to favor higher ranking schools. But it would be a little different if you're given large scholarships from LUC/Kent/Depaul and don't want to take on a lot of debt. Just some personally thoughtsgivemea170 wrote:Anyone care to help? I obviously need to do a lot more research!

So no chances with big law at LUC/Kent/Depaul you think? Even if I could manage top 10%?magicbunny wrote:I would choose UIUC. I've heard that LUC gives you a solid chance at BigLaw. Check their website. They seem to be fairly transparent about their job placement. I believe the Stat sheet or the Viewbook has a decent breakdown of employment. I remember reading somewhere that Loyola places well, but can't remember where.givemea170 wrote:So no chances with big law at LUC/Kent/Depaul you think? Their fact sheet says among those graduates practicing in the private sector 51% of them are in law firms with 2-10 attorneys, whereas 15% are in firms with more than 250 attorneys. So yes, you probably need to do better than top 10% at Loyola to get a biglaw job. And that's for the class of 2010 (a particularly bad year though).

The link gives biglaw placement for the Top 50 schools that paced into biglaw.
Loyola placed 10.9% into biglaw last year, while UIUC placed 17.9% last year.
So, honestly, I think it really just comes down to where you get more money. Neither school will get you biglaw outside Chicago. But a nice scholarship from LUC, and I could definitely see someone going there over UIUC, especially with the new mess they put themselves in.
Hope that helped.

I definitely want to live in Chicago for the next three years. Champaign is not bad but it isn't Chicago and even though it is only a few hours away it will feel like forever. The cost of living in Chicago sucks but I have a much bigger scholarship if I land in Chicago than Champaign and I'm not getting in state so I may just have to turn the Illini down.

For what it is worth, I was admitted to LUC with $12,000/year. I sent them an email asking if some additional merit aid would be available at some future point in the admissions process. I received a reply stating they don't negotiate. This may not be true for all people, since I know schools will tell some people they negotiate and others they don't (or won't), but I thought it was kind of a bummer.

This was true last year. LUC has a reputation for being stingy with the scholarship funds, but loose with the stipulations. I went back to last year's thread and they also mentioned that LUC did not negotiate.station4 wrote:For what it is worth, I was admitted to LUC with $12,000/year. I hear ya. I ran some numbers on my personal situation for LUC vs DePaul (with 15k, 7500, and 0). When viewing LUC vs DePaul (7500), it is a matter of roughly $1,900 a year difference in favor of DePaul. Still a dissapointment that they don't negotiate, but still not a bad deal when compared to a 7500 @ DePaul.rma wrote:Ahh... damn.JG7773 wrote:This was true last year. I have 15k at DePaul, so it'd be about a $9-10k difference.JG7773 wrote:I hear ya. I ran some numbers on my personal situation for LUC vs DePaul (with 15k, 7500, and 0). Still, I prefer LUC over DePaul, even at the price. Kent is more generous with the scholarship $$, so hopefully I'll hear from them soon. A nice package from them would indeed make this decision difficult.

I am in the same boat. I have a 15k offer from DePaul (but ran the 7,500 to be realistic just in case I don't end up in the top 40%) and I am still waiting on Chicago-Kent.rma wrote:

I don't have anything in my mailings either. Do you think that means we won't be getting anything?rma wrote:I'm not expecting anything because as I mentioned earlier, there is nothing listed under mailings for me.CPM723 wrote:You may not hear from them until this week. If I don't hear anything from them soon, looks like I will go into negotiation mode.
Wish me luck!
That being said, I'll probably wait until March, and if i don't hear anything I'll try to negotiate then.

I'd send one. Someone earlier in the thread visited the school an indicated that they seemed to value them quite a bit.givemea170 wrote:Did anyone send a Why LUC essay? I didn't do it but I"m about to do it to make sure they don't yield protect on me like a few other schools did!
You may get in anyway, but why take the risk? Writing one took me about 20 minutes.

I'd say given your situation, if you are serious about wanting to go to Loyola, definitely do it. You should have plenty of good reasons to use if you really like the school. I had many, but chose to focus on just a handful in detail in order to be more effective. I would assume it would certainly help with the whole yield protection aspect if they see you've taken the time to write the optional essay and can provide them with well-thought out reasons for why you'd choose them given your numbers.
Good luck to you!
On another note, has anyone tried to negotiate scholarship amount yet?

Not that I would copy anything you wrote, but do you mind letting me see your LUC? I seem to write a lot better when I have an example. If not, that is cool.sbuzz wrote:I'd say given your situation, if you are serious about wanting to go to Loyola, definitely do it. This morning I got an email from the school inviting me to two upcoming events. the Discover Loyola event on March 17th and a Merit Scholarship Recipients Reception the night before on March 16th. I haven't received any financial aid information other than my in my original packet where they said scholarships would be sent out in March. I was wondering if everybody received the same invite, or if this was an early indicator that I should expect some sort of scholarship offer.
