I would appreciate if someone please tell me why they have selected UMiami for reasons other than merit award?

I'm interested to see responses to this as well. I'm still deciding between schools right now and my scholarship at Miami is playing a big role in the decision process. For those of you attending, what are your reasons?

While not a huge jump, Miami made back some of the ground they lost last year in the rankings. Up to #69 from #77.

Last year Miami fell from #60 to #77.

Outside of the T14, all of the other schools are thrown into a hat and drawn at random.

tfleming isn't far off. Really, though, US News slightly changes their ranking system every year to ensure that they keep selling magazines. Usually it has something to do with how employment after graduating is ranked. Depending on the system for the year, Miami does a little better or a little worse. I think their rankings for the past few years have been 69, 77, 60, 71. They were as low as 80 something not too long ago if I remember correctly. The general trend, as far as I can, is upward though. Miami's new Momentum2 fundraiser should help them. A portion of the $1.6 billion they're attempting to raise is going towards law scholarships and much needed additions/renovations.

This is only a general statement, but I think in last year's thread, they didn't budge on scholarships. I think they have some general formula that they apply. That's not to say don't go for it, but just don't "expect" it.

And I just got into FSU but have had my heart set on Miami for the past few months. Now that I've started looking at housing and other things in Miami I'm beginning to see how expensive it could be, this is getting tough..

Totally, I didn't get into Miami but I certainly was just down there checking out various schools and rent would be (on average) $1200 as a single. If you wanted to live really close to the school, at least. Obviously, you could get a double but sometimes you have to debate the double vs. your own space idea.

I'm out of state, but the one thing I do know about Florida since I've been everywhere from Tallahassee (applied for for a Masters program and got in) to Fort Myers on over to Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville, the entire state of Florida has different regions. Tallahassee is different than Jacksonville. Clearwater is different than Fort Lauderdale. Fort Lauderdale is different from Miami. And you really can't compare the beaches on the Gulf to the Atlantic Coast. Sand-wise or color of water.

There was one complex that I looked at in the Tallahassee area that was around $1,000 too but it was located like 20 mins or so away. It had a more adult feel to it too. Students, but quiet.

I just feel like Miami has a much stronger rep in South Florida which is where I'll be practicing and also a better pull in the private sector. The networking at Miami is incomparable to FSU but it is just so much to pay at sticker (which is what I'm looking at).

On another note, do people usually bring parents to ASD or are those people pointed out as some sort of outcast for bringing them? My parents are paying for my first year and I feel its appropriate to have them involved as much as they'd like, but not at the cost of hurting my rep lol.

I don't know about how ASD differs from school to school as I attended events that flavors of both accepted students and students that were interested but hadn't applied. I would assume that if it's strictly admitted students to dress up (not fancy) to fit in. With one event, they separated those that had actually been accepted (we were given lanyards) and those that were mildly interested in the school. Parents did attend, but it was uncommon. I brought my parents along as I use them as a sounding board. I think it would be more than fine for your parents to go. You want them to see it and honestly, if they're paying, they should be allowed to go whether you want them there or not. I was just at U of Miami. I liked it - too bad they had no love for me. COA is just ridiculous though. It looks like the Red Roads Commons is run by the same company that I had while living out in CA. Ridiculously expensive but they were good. I hear more UGs stay there though.

I was also just in Ft. Myers. My parents love that area and we constantly vacation on Sanibel Island. My parents are looking to retire/do double housing duty down in that area. But yeah, if you want S. Florida, I would go Miami over FSU. Just make sure that you can afford the COA that Miami will have. Also, make sure your line of work will have job opportunities in S. FL since Tallahassee is the gov't hub.

BearsGrl: Yea I heard Red Road was flooded with UG and it runs 1,500 for a 1/1. I'm looking for more in that area but am hoping to pay around $1,200 for a 1/1 so I'm going to need some luck! Also, you said they showed you no love, where will you be attending? You can PM me if you like so we dont flood the thread with personal correspondence.

I did a LOCI, sent in an additional recommendation from a UM Alum attorney, took a tour of the school, etc.

How did you find out you were on hold? I applied but there is no status checker so I have no idea what my status is. Were you notified via e-mail?

I received an email to create a UM account and then eventually received another email to check my account. On my UM account, there is a link for an admission letter.

When I go on my UM, the link takes me to LSAC. I know my application is complete in their office, but this doesn't reflect that. Any thought?
