I think it depends on the person, I'm not sure that any school outside of HYS is worth 200k of debt.

I know i'm in the minority.....but I don't even think those schools are worth that kind of debt. *shrug*soitgoes9 wrote:I think it depends on the person, I'm not sure that any school outside of HYS is worth 200k of debt.

I'm more with you than not. I'm not sure you can make an argument for 200k of debt for any place but HYS.Magnifique1908 wrote:I know i'm in the minority.....but I don't even think those schools are worth that kind of debt. *shrug*soitgoes9 wrote:I think it depends on the person, I'm not sure that any school outside of HYS is worth 200k of debt.

Re: UCI (UC Irvine) c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
For me, I want to live and work in Orange County. Considering that the only other law schools in OC are Chapman and Whittier, UCI students will be much more competitive for the best legal jobs in the area.[/quote]
I thought in a similar way when I applied. I thought UCI students will be competitive in Irvine area, and I would LOVE to live there. However, recently my friend told me about her friend who is graduating from UCI-law in 2012. She said that this lady was not able to find a good job in Irvine, but found a biglaw job in the East Coast. So she will be moving there. That really scared me. If their Star batch of students who were all given full scholarships cannot find jobs in SoCal, what will happen to us?
I guess I am trying to prepare myself for the worst case scenario.

Big law is a great outcome even if its not in your preferred location. I think it bodes better for placement in general than a good job in Irvine.

Irvine =/= southern California.
How about the rest of Orange county? How about LOS ANGELES? I'm taking your post with a pretty big grain of salt.

Hmm, not sure which student that is. But I know the OC firms were really big on candidates showing a commitment to OC. I think that gives UCI law students an edge, by virtue of attending school here. But I was still grilled on my commitment and one firm I think asked me trick questions to see how enthusiastic I was about being close to LA. OC firms seem to fear associates leaving OC for LA. Regarding finding a job in Irvine - there aren't that many big law firms in Irvine, and they tend to take on 1 or 2 SAs a year, if they take any on at all, same with Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. So in just the immediate are that is maybe 50 SA positions in the Irvine/Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area and they aren't all going to go to UCI students. But UCI is competitive in LA, San Diego and even the east coast looking at where students have been placing for summer work.zinc wrote: I thought in a similar way when I applied. And UCI isn't going to be different than other schools that are its peer, not everyone will get a big law placement, you still have to be in top half of the class, maybe top third of the class (not really sure since we don't rank), or have an otherwise compelling resume to get a biglaw job. I do think the local firms are committed to seeing UCI succeed though and want to hire from UCI. But no matter where you attend law school, there are no guarantees.

See, for me personally, I would attend UCI over UCLA/USC(hopefully) ONLY because of my strong desire of working/living in Irvine. Biglaw would be great, but a medium sized firm will be OK too. So when my friend told me about this person not being able to find a job in Irvine, or even rest of SoCal, I was honestly quite worried. But I don't know if this person wanted only BigLaw, or how she ranked in her class etc. So those things might have a role to play in this.
UCI2013, if you could illuminate us about the job prospects that would be very helpful.

Don't know if this has been covered already, but I got accepted in early December via e-mail and regular mail (but missed the call from the Dean - oops!).
Last week I also received a letter offering a $55k scholarship for the first year, and the letter says it's renewable for the second and third years. I know zilch about how scholarships typically work, but I assume this means I'd be expected to maintain a certain GPA in order to renew the scholarship? If that's the case does anyone know if it would definitely be renewed or if there's a chance it wouldn't be - the "renewable" thing is just brining up lots of questions, so if anyone has any input, that would be great.

Wow, 55k! Congrats! So far the only requirement that's been stated here is a 2.0 gpa.hookem12 wrote:Don't know if this has been covered already, but I got accepted in early December via e-mail and regular mail (but missed the call from the Dean - oops!).

I think everything I've received from them has had some kind of typo or grammatical error in it.azbycxdd wrote:email today

Got an email saying I was accepted, and I'll get the official letter within the week. Very happy, since this is my first acceptance of the cycle.
However, I was wondering... How long after being accepted will you typically hear about a scholarship offer? It would probably take a pretty big scholarship for me to attend.

For me....one week, but I was accepted in January. I think they are just starting scholarships, so those who were admitted last year just heard and all new admits will probably hear sooner.
