I bet if you sent them a "Why Mich State" they would admit you within the week with your stats!Lindsey4468 wrote:Ah... Forgot about the YP. Thanks!ashley12 wrote:Little thing called YP. Does anyone know when we get log-in info for the MSU site? I got in about a month and a half ago and don't recall ever getting a username/password. I was hoping to log-in and see further info on their travel stipends (unless i'm missing it somewhere, I have yet to see specifics on it).

I saw the info in one of the newsletter emails from Dean Roboski. If you don't have it, I'm sure a quick call to the school will get you the info.llachans wrote:Does anyone know when we get log-in info for the MSU site? Just got an email from an application coordinator who wanted to remind me that I haven't sent them a Why MSU essay. I replied and withdrew. Hopefully this helps someone here!

I mean, they were basically trying to call my bluff and it worked. I don't really have ties to Michigan and don't want to live there. I was using it for leverage because I thought the scholarship would be good.ashley12 wrote:Yeah, I don't think I'll be writing that essay. I am withdrawing. I applied to MSU back in early October but asked them to hold off my app till I take the February LSAT and get the score. Maybe this is being highly optimistic but do you think there would be enough scholarship money left by then?

I think there will because they have a large budget and they seem to have automatic amounts.fatpeopleavenger wrote:I applied to MSU back in early October but asked them to hold off my app till I take the February LSAT and get the score. It is interesting that MSU is making you write this extra essay. I assume it probably helps bring down their numbers for those accepted that don't plan to attend. Good strategy. It drives down the acceptance rate without hurting the possibility of getting a candidate with high numbers.

It seems that people are treating the Why MSU essay like it is a difficult paper to put out. A lot of schools are asking for these kind of essays. It is meant to show genuine interest in attending the school. Notre Dame is well known for denying students that don't write the Why ND essay, and admitting students with lower numbers that do write the essay. Attrition looks worse on a school than accepting students with lower numbers. In the end, wouldn't you rather be in classes with people that actually want to be there rather than be surrounded by people who are just waiting to transfer?

I don't think anyone is acting like it is difficult in any way. I've written about a dozen of these. At least for me, the MSU essay request was a good way for them to help their attrition without excluding those with higher numbers who have genuine interest. Once I got the essay request, I realized I have no real intention to attend MSU and withdrew. Simple as that. This late in the cycle, I'm not going to write a false essay explaining "Why I want to attend School X" when that particular school isn't even on my short list.chickenfed wrote:It seems that people are treating the Why MSU essay like it is a difficult paper to put out. +1 I never had any intention of actually going. I was using it as scholarship leverage for a school a little closer to home. I already got better leverage though, so I no longer need to bother.ashley12 wrote:I don't think anyone is acting like it is difficult in any way. I've written about a dozen of these. Honestly, if you can't articulate a reason for attending a school then you probably wouldn't go if admitted.
I think it's a wise move on their part to ask for a Why MSU statement.

It's nothing about articulation and more about scholarship leverage. I could go on about how wonderful MSU is but it's not fair to applicants interested in the school.NCGuy wrote:Honestly, if you can't articulate a reason for attending a school then you probably wouldn't go if admitted.

Yes it is to their best interests to request such an essay.

+1 to this too. I like MSU and would go there if it were in my state, but it's not. It was a bluff to get them to offer me a scholarship so I could get a better scholarship with a school closer to home. I'm not going to pursue it further though now that I don't need it.cdelgado wrote:It's nothing about articulation and more about scholarship leverage.
