Ive been keeping up with the thread here and I agree that the way that WM does it's admissions is bogus. The absurd motion of making people wait only to waitlist them is unprofessional. The fact that some if their deans of admissions are recent law school graduates who cannot seem to venture beyond the confounds of that school is also absurd. When I toured the school the guide that I had was some dude who was in his mid-20s who talked about how everyone hangs out in the breakroom playing foosball between classes. They had people running around acting like it was a Greek undergrad mixer rather than a law school. I gave up on that school some time ago and I have connections to it.

If an admissions dean at that college has less courtroom time than me and I'm not even a lawyer yet then I have reason to be suspect. Their lack of communication with applicants and their long waiting period for applicNts only to be waitlisted might be part of the reason why their rankings fell so far. These are just my observations an opinions.

Every single law school abuses the waitlist. It's a side effect of the ranking system.

waitlisted as well. Perhaps our status checker changing so much really did mean something haha? Seems like a lot of us who had said that was occurring got responses (all waitlists).

IDK I kind of agree with you. While other schools do it too their admissions office seemed like a joke to me. When I met with the dean a while back she started off by saying, "So you're interested in applying next year?" to which I replied "No, I applied back in January, and yours was the first school to which I applied...." Needless to say when a dean knows they are going to meet with you and hasn't looked at your file (or hasn't bothered looking @ your file perhaps- I told her via email I applied before our meeting). I was also REALLY surprised she only has her Ed.D, whereas I thought most admissions deans had law degrees (look @ the T14, like UVA). Seems to make sense that a lawyer would know what to look for, butttt maybe I am just fishing...

In either case on my tour I thought the place was beautiful; but in a class when the teacher asked "In 2006, President Bush was dealing with the aftermath of what?" and then gets silence, and then says "It was a natural disaster," and then a student replied that he was running for reelection against John Kerry; well it just kinda makes you wonder..

To be fair, John Kerry WAS a natural disaster.

I don't quite understand all of the waitlist whining that goes on... W&M has ALWAYS used their waitlist extensively. We all knew this when we applied... Just because you got accepted at a better school, or a peer with $$ does NOT mean that every other school looks for those same things, or even agrees! People need to cool it just a bit... it seriously isn't personal guys!

To people who tried to negotiate with W&M: any luck? How long did they take to make a new offer?

I'm a current student and I can assure you that W&M accepts of the waitlist and gives $$ off the waitlist. My classmates are proof. Send LOCI's and visit if you are truly interested.

They will negotiate to an extent. Negotiate early and leverage your stats and other offers. It worked for me last year. I think the turn around time was about a week.

Also, make sure you apply for a Fellowship if you haven't already. They are BS jobs your first year and research positions later but you get paid and get in-state tuition which makes W&M very affordable.

Whaaaaaat? You think 40% of the students who matriculate are on full rides?
I'm just going by what I think I read somewhere.
No one. The school has a policy that everyone pays something. A lot of people don't pay much... but everyone pays something.

If you guys have any questions about the school, feel free to post or PM me. I'll do my best to get you some answers and I look forward to see you all at admitted students weekend (totally worth going to, by the way).
