just got accepted to a pretty crappy law school, question..
Can i negotiate a better Merit Scholarship?
the tuition to this 4th tier law school is 40K and the Merit Schol. is only 7K. Can i negotiate and ask for at least 20K scholarship to attend?
is this possible?
thanks in advance, i will be using this forum a lot in the near future it seems!

You can try but you will almost assuredly fail in negotiating for more money since you have no leverage which is usually in the form of a large scholarship somewhere else or an acceptance to a better school.
Also, you really shouldn't go to a fourth tier law school.

Is this for the coming school session, 2011-2012?
Can you reapply? If you are going to go a T4, apply to schools around that school, and try to juggle the scholarships you'll get between them to maximize the value. a 13k yearly bump in scholarship is quite unlikely from a law school (which are usually very stingy with aid) without some sort of pressure.

Figure they need a few more students badly now so i can leverage them by saying I am applying to better schools for next year if they dont higher the offer.
Also how would i even ask for more scholarship, do i need to send an email or call up?

Do you have the numbers to apply to better schools with a reasonable chance of getting in? If not, then it won't give you much leverage.eatmyshorts wrote: Figure they need a few more students badly now so i can leverage them by saying I am applying to better schools for next year if they dont higher the offer.

Though it could be fruitless trying, you undoubtedly have to try. Your theory may hold true, they rather have some money from a student than an empty seat. Email is fine, I think a phone call could get awkward if the person you talk to isn't in the position to handle your inquiry. I'd be careful how you go about asking for more, though. Make sure it's done "well."eatmyshorts wrote:yeah wanted to go this year if i go. classes are starting in a few weeks.booboo wrote:Is this for the coming school session, 2011-2012?

What's your gpa and lsat? Don't go though, you'll have to wait this year out. Take advantage of this time to study for the October LSAT, get some work experience, and re-evaluate your goals to determine if you REALLY want to go to law school.

If you know ahead of time that it's a crappy law school, why would you go to it?

Your GPA isn't that bad, just try retaking in October and reapply to schools early in the next cycle.eatmyshorts wrote:152 and 3.2 GPANYC Law wrote:What's your gpa and lsat? Agreed. I have only a slightly higher GPA but my LSAT score got me into a T20. Focus hard on the LSAT and get the 165+.NYC Law wrote:Your GPA isn't that bad, just try retaking in October and reapply to schools early in the next cycle.eatmyshorts wrote:152 and 3.2 GPANYC Law wrote:What's your gpa and lsat? truth is i already took Lsat a few times and got 152 both times. But I am/was lazy and studied about a total of 15 hours for each test and i just wanted to get into a law school and work my way from there.law4vus wrote:Agreed. But if you're too lazy to study now for 1 test, how can you be sure you'll have the discipline to study for multiple law school exams each semester?eatmyshorts wrote:

40k tuition for a TTTT? You might want to search the name of your school with "third tier reality" on Google.

my goal was just get into one, I know that was a messed up philosophy. Once I am in a law school i know I can be near the top of the class if I tried. Now I have to weigh the going to crappy school vs the year it takes to get into another programkwais wrote:this. this. and this. In case you're serious, here's a story of someone who ended up top third at his TTT and still ended up jobless and in tons of debt.

What are your numbers ? 152 LSAT & 3.2 GPA ? To which other law schools were you accepted ? Which law school offered the $7,000 (JMLS Atlanta ?) ? What do you have that would allow you to negotiate ?

Assuming this isn't a flame the bolded is totally unrealistic. Look into law school grading policies. There might even be a wikipedia article on it. If you can't find anything just ask... we'll be happy to explain it to you.
