Can you defer enrollment after being accepted early decision?
What is the best way of going about this? email? phone call?

Ask them for a deferral, state your reasons. They may not grant it but you can always withdraw even if you ED.

I'm actually interested in reading a discussion about this, without the ED part.
OP, I'm assuming you can say you'd like to defer for financial reasons.
