In at Harvard and held at Columbia??
did this happen to anyone else? I'm wondering if a) this indicates that I have poor "softs" or b) this indicates that Columbia assumes I'll probably be going to one of the top three, and they're hoping that I'll drop out of consideration, allowing them to keep their yield high.

Re: In at Harvard and held at Columbia??
Since you're serious: It sounds like B. If you really wanted to go there, you'd follow up with a LOCI indicating how much you wanted to attend, and they'd admit you. If you don't (which is what it sounds like) you won't and they'll WL you as a form of yield protection.
It could be both. Maybe it's poor softs plus an assumption HLS will accept you on numbers alone anyway. Just saying.

Unless this is out of pure curiosity (and if it is, OP is on the borderline of whiny), what is the problem? This reminds me of the guy a few months back who was crying about not getting into UMich while being accepted to CLS.

Actually, I can empathize because I'm in the same boat. No idea why things turned out the way they did, but I'm not looking back! I don't know if anyone has an answer to this, but it definitely speaks to the crapshoot that is LS admissions.onebiglie wrote:did this happen to anyone else? OP, why do you make the assumption that because you got into the number 2 school, the number 4 school should accept you as well? We're not talking about an obvious YP here (like being waitlisted at University of Minnesota but being accepted at HLS).
Admission to any school does not mean automatic admission to the schools ranked below it.

Columbia doesn't waitlist people they think will go Top 3, they give them Hamiltons.
