Biggest surprises this cycle

Post by tinlawman » Sun Mar 20, 2011 3:15 pm

What were your biggest surprises (both acceptances and rejections/waitlists)? Please include your stats

I'll start
170/sub 2.6

Accepted: UMN
Waitlisted: GW (thought I would be a rejection), Syracuse (thought I would get in for sure-this was my safety school)
Rejected: UPitt (thought I would get in-I go to school near Pitt)

My cycle has played out EXACTLY as it would in relation to medians with not 1 deviation. I doubt there will be many surprises, admissions in the states is as predictable as whose going to have the highest payroll in baseball.

160, 3.0

Surprise Acceptance:
FSU-- OOS, non-URM

Surprise Non-Acceptance:
UTK waitlist-- In-state. Looking at the medians, it shouldn't be much of a surprise, but after getting into FSU (OOS, higher ranking, higher admissions standards), I was kind of expecting to get in.

Obviously my biggest surprise was getting flat-out rejected by UW, since my entire cycle was geared around getting in to UW. The whole reason that I took an extra year and retook the LSAT and scored a 175 was to boost my chance of getting in to UW. And then, in the end, I didn't.

WL at Penn with a 157/3.95 (thought it would be an outright rejection).

I am white/Cuban, so a little semi-URM action is going on there I guess.

Sorry to hear that.. They really seem to be pretty crazy about GPAs.. I got dinged there too last year. Had a much lower LSAT, but I think it was still at their median or close to it, and I had a 3.5 UGPA. With your numbers I bet you'll get at least one T14 though no?

Nope, I didn't... the only schools I was accepted to at all this cycle were WUSTL and Seattle U. Got dinged by UVA and Northwestern, and still haven't heard from Columbia; they probably saw my application and just laughed and tossed it, figuring it was a joke.

Maybe I should have applied to more schools, but I thought I had a good group already. Hindsight, I guess.

Biggest surprise: Getting In at Georgetown with a 161 and just over a 4.0.

Smaller surprise: Getting into Emory with money.

Also, surprised that UPenn actually decided to put me under committee review without denying me flat out! The rejection should come any day now...
