Any Michigan State 2011 Applicants

Post by NScott » Tue Nov 23, 2010 8:22 am

The main reason I applied to MSU was because I received a letter stating that if I applied before Nov. 1, I was guaranteed a decision by Nov. 19. Yeaaaah, that didn't happen, still waiting. I see most of those finding out have high LSAT scores, which seems to be the trend among the schools. Not mad or anything, just didn't need to sign up for more nail biting. Any thoughts, or similar experiences?

I got an email yesterday from MSU yesterday that asked for an additionally essay for scholarship consideration as they are currently experiencing a 25% increase in applications from last year. I guess they weren't expecting as many people to apply.

Hmm, I guess that's why they're behind on releasing decisions. Although, they recruit like crazy, so you'd think they would expect an increase.

Yup, same here. I actually totally forgot about that until you just mentioned it. I probably would not go to MSU, but it would've been nice to hear back by now considering I applied in the beginning of October.

Yeah, I applied in mid-October. It definitely would've been nice to hear back by now, or at least have an updated time frame from them.

i applied here as well. I wrote them an e-mail saying that I changed my mind and am not taking the december lsat . While they responded within 10 minutes, my status hasnt changed one bit ( review delayed until all lsat scores are in). I sent everything in a month ago, and still no updates.

Im starting to think that although in TLS world, we are applying on time--- in actuality we applied super early, and they wont start looking at applications until md december or later.

No, they definitely started sending decisions out. if you look at lawschoolnumbers.com, that is a good resource.

I submitted on Oct 1 and heard back on November 18th. So the decisions are certainly on their way!

Where do you sit compared to their percentiles? (If you don't mind my asking)

No problem; I'm at their median for LSAT and above the 75% for GPA.

I'm 75% for LSAT and median for GPA. I think you're more well-balanced in #'s. Most of the others on LSN have been 75% in both, I believe. Did you get a call?

Yes, I got a call but sadly was in class. Luckily, the assistant director left a very nice vmail message. Also, checked my status checker because I was curious and it turns out it did not change until 2 days later. Once it did update, the status checker also included scholarship information, which I thought was very helpful.

Wow, cool. I was under the impression that my status checker would be stuck forever. Apparently that's happened to a bunch of folks from other schools. It is cool that they'll include scholarship info. as well!

My status checker still says Complete 10/21/2010 although I definitely wasn't complete then because my October LSAT didn't come out until the 29th. I still haven't gotten an admissions decision yet, obviously. I feel like I'll probably get accepted as I got a phone call from a 3L asking me to apply and I am within their range with pretty extensive softs.

Yeah, mine has been complete for 5 weeks, tomorrow. The only reason it bugs me is because they guaranteed an answer by the 19th. So I guess the 2 year old in me is just repeating, "but they saaaid!" I feel like I have a good chance as well, a 2L called me and I'm within range. I have no idea how these schools weigh the softs, so I don't know if mine are gonna help at all.

I also got the e-mail about the additional essay on 11/16. After I turned it back in, my status checker went back to complete on 11/19.

Got the call on the 16th with an acceptance. They didn't say anything about an additional essay for the scholarship I got. What did they ask you to write about?

It was basically a "why MSU" essay.

Interesting...I checked my status today and it says "Re-Review in February" which I take as a hint that I shouldn't be so confident. The key must be to be completely hopeless about getting in. I suspect this has something to do with my GPA as I'm at the median for their LSAT.

Mine is also going to be re-reviewed in February. The admissions office said that the majority of the people that go into re-review get accepted. She also said it was a positive thing....

I was looking around on LSN and they do "defer" quite a few people with reasonably good numbers who should be auto-admits (I'm talking 160 LSAT, reasonably GPA). I think it's kind of YP. They figure, they don't want to make a decision just to see if you will withdraw or not since you most likely have other options. It makes a lot of sense I suppose.

Maybe that's true but I got a fully scholly there with a 3.6-3.7, 160-165. Just giving a range because I would rather not post actual numbers right now.

Well it also seems dependent on when you applied. I retook the October LSAT and so I didn't go complete until Early November instead of when I initially applied in early October. Looking at the range of acceptances (well the amount I can see on LSN), most people who have already been accepted applied and went complete in early October. So, I guess they are shuffling through those who went complete after those October scores and it's complicating some of the decision-making process. I'd be interested to see what the next wave of acceptances look like though.

BTW, I am basing this guess off of the experiences others have had with deferrals at MSU as well as other schools when they have had the numbers to get in.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
