WARNING, WARNING, WARNING!!British wrote:Hi all:
I applied to NYLS, CUNY, Fordham, St. John's and Hofstra.
Rejected by St. John's and Fordham.
Accepted by NYLS.
Waitlisted by Hofstra.
Still haven't heard a peep from CUNY (I applied in January)
Here is my question:
NYLS want a $500 seat deposit on June 1 and will not agree to an extension.
I so cannot afford to lose that kind of money to NYLS if it turns out I get into Hofstra or CUNY. Both of those schools appeal to me more because NYLS is so expensive (the cost terrifies me!) CUNY is much more reasonably priced and would be great for me as I am interested in practicing Immigrant Rights law or working for USCIS. Hofstra I applied to part-time so I could keep working part-time at my Paralegal job, which again would make it much more affordable.
So what do you think should I pay the deposit to NYLS in case I don't get in anywhere else? Or should I take a risk and let the NYLS deadline lapse and hope to God I get into one of my top-choices?
I would so appreciate your insight. Thank you.

No, you didn't type anything wrong. You were just being (correctly) warned to stay away from NYLS. An incredibly expensive school with incredibly bad job prospects. I'd stay away.British wrote:WARNING what??? Did I type something wrong?

No. Retake and reapply. NYLS for most people is basically a swindle.

Wait wait wait...
What's wrong with this picture?
You can't afford to lose $500? But you're seriously contemplating paying $43,500 a year to attend New York Law School?I so cannot afford to lose that kind of money to NYLS if it turns out I get into Hofstra or CUNY.

If you've never taken a standardized test before, you REALLY should study your ass off and retake, whether you get into CUNY or Hofstra or not. I wouldn't be surprised if you could increase your score enough to get scholarship money at significantly better schools than the ones you're currently considering.British wrote:Thank you I was afraid I had typed something illegal so I quickly deleted my post. I am so paranoid.
I think I agree with you about NYLS, thank you for your advice. I think that the fact that they won't even give me a small extension on the deadline is an omen of how they might be later on. More importantly, they are so so so expensive, I don't know how anyone can afford that!
FYI I got a 150 (not v. good I know but I never did a standardized test before). Foreign degree was translated as being "above average" I have a British law degree and 5 years of experience as a law clerk.
Thanks again for your insights.
Is anyone else waiting to hear from CUNY? I don't know what to make of their slowness, I never thought it would take them 5 months to respond to me.

Yes you can study, and it helps a lot. Sign up for September, go to the LSAT section of this forum and find a proper study plan.British wrote:Yes, I did some practice questions and practice tests.
Can you really study though - I mean it is not based on prior knowledge it is an IQ test.

You absolutely can study. 150 to 170 isn't uncommon on this board. I studied a 152 first diag to a 168 on test day.British wrote:Yes, I did some practice questions and practice tests.

Flame. I don't like calling people "flames" or "trolls" or whatever but this guy is definitely one. He's trying to get people riled up.

Take the LSAT again you ignorant slut.British wrote:I absolutely promise I am not a flame, please don't think that.
I am a 27 year old girl from England and I emigrated here 3 years ago.
This is my second time on the site (I joined a few days ago) and I am genuinely asking these questions.
I was just trying to be a bit light-hearted and I meant it that my job is dull. Being a paralegal is no fun if you have ambition to do more than that.
